Slight play in steering column joint

1984 924. Non power steering.

Just checking car over and noticed some slight play in the UV Joint at the top of the lower steering column shaft. The play is in the joint itself, not the connecting bolt to the upper shaft. It's not a massive amount, but enough that you can feel it if you grab and waggle hard. Is this acceptable or should I replace the lower shaft.

Can I buy just the lower shaft in the UK and if so is it a 'real' porsche part for the standard 924 or a VW/Audi part ?

thanks for your advice
Martin

It is available separately. It is a real Porsche part - even if it's just pulled from a VW Audi parts bin.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

REALLY? That much? That's insane!

In that case I suggest contacting a company in Hertfordshire called Recoprop - they can make a copy better than the original. They specialise in propshafts for custom / competition machines but make one offs like that all the time. Driveshafts too. They did a steering shaft for my race car and the quality of their work is superb. £25
