problems, problems

...well, i guess i'll just start with my lil' sob story...
I bought the car in 2001, owned it two weeks and hydroplaned off a curve and into a tree, pretty much denting the heck outta my drivers side door and rocker panel. So then i save up after that, buying a door off of ebay.
So there i am on my way back from Louisville Ky, having just purchased the door to fix my car - the final part i needed mind you, and then a deer decides to commit suicide and skewer itself upon my beloved ride. So then i needed a new front spoiler, hood, drivers side head light, and header panel. It was a big doe. To top it all off, it had defecated upon the side of my 944, sticking to the drivers side mirror. So i do what anyone in love with his car would do - order the best of the best and wait months to get it.
Then the front end starts acting up, so i have to purchase new tie rods and shocks. So, again, i went with the best i could find, using even more time.
I waited and waited and waited, finally getting my hood. Then i waited a bit longer, getting the body kit. However, about this time my clutch went out. So then i waited longer, saved up some more and via selling my soul on ebay i had enough for a clutch kit.
I then made the mistake of letting my uncle fix the clutch. Dont get me wrong, he's a great mechanic, just really, really busy. He had the car 4 months. Then i allowed his friend to do the body work, and this took another two.
However, the rainy night i heard my 944's exhaust rumble into the garage was my moment of triumph. It was in perfect shape, albeit a bit dusty on the inside. So i drove it to town to show it off, being pulled over by a kind officer 2 miles down the road that informed me that i had no tail lights what so ever, so i did a u-turn and headed back home for the night.
I did, how ever enjoy the car for quite sometime - about 6 weeks, and then i was put in my current predicament.
I was on my way to class, ran into a gas station for some caffiene, and ran back out. I put the car in first and started off, it jerking and clicking the whole 5 feet that i had moved it.
i hope that you have enjoyed the tragedy that is my 944.
ok, here's the deal. ive taken it to my locale shop who told me that the tranny is out. However, it goes forward in first and second, albeit with a jolt and a click. Reverse also works but with the same problems. Is it possible that maybe it is just a CV joint or something along those lines?

Start small! Replace the CV's and then see what happens. They probably need replacing anyway.
Take a look yourself and see if something is visable. Do you know where they(cv) are? You should be able to grab hold and see the amount of play.

I assume the car will shift fine in all gears? Feel normal?

ok, thanks guys. I think i also need to find a new shop, as that when it was the clutch he also told me that it was the tranny.

another question, too. For some reason, before the whole lack of movement thing started, it would kinda hesitate and sputter at around 3500 rpms. I thought it might be a fuel problem, so i replaced the fuel pump and filter. This didt help. So then i thought it might be electrical, so i replaced all the wires and plugs. nadda. So now im in a bit of a dilemma. The only two other problems i can think that might cause this could be an oxygen sensor or maybe even something like a vaccum hose?

anyway, in case you havent picked up on it, im not much of a mechanic...i just know a lil' bit of the basics that i've picked up here and there.

Slightly sputter? or clear it?Not sure about the exact meaning of sputter,but may be is pinging,3500 rpm is the ideal number.Search recently threads about that,maybe helps...

You probably broke the rear end parts of the transmission. Mine went one day while cruising down the road at normal speed and everything!

I could drive the car, but loud clunks came from the rear end...similar to what you hear.

I wouldn't replace anything yet. Reach into the transmission with a magnet and see if any chunks collect on it. Then you'll know if you've broken the internals of the rear end.

If I had your "adventure" I would have given up and make a Guards Red lawn ornament/mailbox.

Will has a good idea! Get a flexible extendable magnet at sears or ace hardware remove the fill plug and search around for "stuff"
I would expect any tranny damage to give you pretty loud clunks not just clicks.

Chock the front wheels and jack up the rear. Rotate a rear wheel and see if you hear light clicking. If you do CV time. They are relatively simple to install and shouldn't need a shop for this.

Definately find a new shop. This dude justs wants to get into the tranny $$$$$$.

if the jolt and click seem to be temporarily "grabbing and jerking" the (rear) wheel, it could very well be a CV joint, as you may have a broken outer race. when this happens the joint will bind, as it won't be able to flex properly and thereby produce said grabbing sensation. check the boot. if this is the case, you may actually see parts sticking through it (usually what happens)
