Mr. Moly lubricants ... Need advice of Y'all
It has been recommended that the only safe oil additive is molybdenum disulfide .
Mr. Moly has many products. I am going to get the Oil additive. My question is : Has anyone also used the Transmission (ATF) additive in the power steering pump ???. Has anyone used the Gear Oil additive in the Manual transmission ???. Or does anyone have any opinions of the products that they carry. Thanks again for your input Don __________________ 1984/85 944na Gold exterior / Black interior Los Angeles / San Diego Lookin for ideas etc... ![]() |

Hi Don,
Moly is a high pressure-hi temp lubricant - normally used in wheel bearings and the like - also a main ingrediant in assembly lube - which is what lubricates the car for the first 15 seconds or so until the oil starts flowing, after which, it is washed away by the oil. There are no oil additives recommended nor should they be necessary - there are many studies out there that show the additives do more harm than good (Slick 50 immediately comes to mind). Summarized below, but in short, you get what you pay for. The money you spend on mediocre oil and an additive is usually more than what you would spend a a good quality oil. If you use a good quality oil or a synthetic and stick to the oil change schedule (3000 miles for regular oil, recommend 5000 - 7500 miles for synthetic), you will not have any wear problems. Recommend Mobil-1 for synthetic and Valvoline for regular oil. Same applies to transmission fluid. Mobil-1, Swepco 201, and Valvoline are excellent lubricants. You want a gear oil in the range of 75W90. There should be no need for ATF additives in the power steering system. the PS system uses ATF for its excellent hydraulic and lubricating properties - considering the relatively low levels of friction internal to the PS system, that should be more than adequate for your needs. The only additive ever recommended by the factory is Chevron TECHRON to keep the fuel injectors clean. Any "Stop leak" product is definately not recommended. AFJuvat

Listen to AFJuvat
best thing to do is to change your all your lubricants as scheduled and according to your mileage/driving style if you want better protection, change it more often

Listen to Mother Juvy!
Under no circumstances use any additives for any application. A good synthetic oil is perfect. I like Mobil 1 but, all vendors have the same make-up.

Thanks a bunch for your input guys...
I was planning on Mobile 1 and changeing all other fluids as well ( tranny, Diff etc.. ), I just thought that molibdimum would have added some additional stuff. Don __________________ 1984/85 944na Gold exterior / Black interior Los Angeles / San Diego Lookin for ideas etc... ![]() |

Things that bunch or clog can seldom help. Slick 50, some other stuff, and similar can clog the oil ports and stuff because they are long strings of stuff. Moly may be different, maybe not: I'm not a freakin chemist. Mobil1 is good stuff, and that's good enough for me. Why reinvent the spoon?
