Post engine transplant help needed!!!!!!!!!

i posted this question before, but here's a more detailed version.

car : '84 944 euro spec (in england).. original engine 2.5litre....

to be transplanted with : '89 944s2 3.0 litre...

I need to know exactly what i will need from the S2 in order to make this successful?
if anyone could let me know i would be extremely grearful....

also how hard would this be to do by a normal mechanic with no porsche experience before??

Thanks for any replies

There is an issue of excellence (I forgot the month/year, but someone here will know) that details dropping a 944S2 motor into a 944S (essencially the same thing you would be doing)...that would answer all of your questions.

Off the top of my head...things to have...

Motor...meaning block, bellhousing, head, etc. (duh)

ECU

wiring to/fro the ECU and motor

I am not sure if the accessories are the same for both motors, so you may want to pick up the accessories too(PS pump, altinator, starter, etc.)

the sensors and all of the new motor's tubing (exhaust system may be different, intake/exhaust manifold, intake pipe, AFM, maybe 02 sensor, etc.)

Things that would be a good idea to have but may or may not be neccessary:

torque tube, new springcentered clutch, transmission, halfshafts, fuel pump, a couple of other things

Let us know if you ever get your hands on that article of excellence.

I'd stick with the stock tranny. More fun, the S2 has longer gears. Better top speed and all but you give up in acceleration. Lets face it, when the hell are you ever going to go 150?its dangerous and not nearly as much fun as a fast 0-80. INOP

You might have to get a cone type Air filter cos the filter is normally behind the badge panel on an S2 and I'm not sure there is room on a 2.5, Also you will need the brakes if you want to use the performance. it will probably be very hard to insure for the road, would make a fun track car though specially if it still looks stock, you could upset a lot of 911's

what's the situation with track racing - any special insurance needed?

also if i wanted to just take it on the track - not to race - would i need to be insured?

also will i need the dash/speedo from the S2?? or will it be compatible...?

I was refering to track days, which strictly do not allow racing against other cars, (though I admit spinning my Turbo after 3 laps holding off a Ferrari 355 probably had a lot to do with the Ferrari) and no you do not need insurance on the track - you can get thrown off for bad driving though. You would have to tow on a trailer to the circuit though.
Ask for an insurance quote before carrying out the work, cos if it's really bad it might be more sensible to swap the engine for an early one + cash.

i tempt to say that you will need the dash from the 944S2, if you don't have the dash, then you will just have to use basic "racing guages" and wire in the necessary emergency lights, and guages for oil pressure, engine temp, etc. the reason being that the connectors on the backs of the gauges aren't identical for the 1984 944 and the later 944S2s.

how hard to do? not impossible, but it's not going to take one weekend either. i'd budget around 30 or 40 hours of solid work to get all the gremlins out.

good luck!
