Mitsubishi tensioning tool?
Yeah, stupid question maybe but with the P9201 costing so much and the Kricket/Optibelt option not passing AFJavat's test (I believe he said he wouldn't do customer cars with it), then .... since Porsche licensed the Mitsubishi balance shaft idea to do the 944 engine, then I was wondering if there is a Mitsubishi belt tensioning tool that would work for us here in P-car land ...
Those guys with the turbo Conquests have to tension their belts too right? Regards, DL

Correct, I would not do a customers car with the kirket\optibelt tool - think about it for a minute, if you were liable for repairs if your tensioning job fails, would you?
Never seen a mitsubishi tensioning tool to answer the rest of your question with any accuracy. AFJuvat

Gee, it's nice to have a friend living up the street who has one.
And, the price is right. All the Guinness I can carry.

Everyone and their dog has moved on to hydraulic or spring loaded tensioners...
I replaced the timing belt on my Rodeo.... and its a monster.... a good 2 inches wide and has a hydraulic tensioner. The scheduled replacement is every 100K.

In what is a final twist of Irony, The porsche tool to measure belt tension on all of the newer cars (meaning Boxster\993\996 accessory belts, NOT 924S, 944 & 968 TIMING BELTS) is made by Kriket.

If I was liable for the repair of someones P car I would use the right tool....
I look at it this way though..Tool cost 500, valve repair cost me 400 including everything to do myself....and You will all think I am crazy here... was kinda fun. Krikit works good for me and very consistant. P tool will come when the car is done and I only have maintanance to do.

As it turns out ...
I visited a Starion/Conquest forum where the folks informed me that their motors don't need no rubber band - they got 'da chain'.

Porsche and Mitsubishi share NOTHING in common at all, except for a concept patented many years ago in Japan.
The twin balance shaft execution in a Porsche, has nothing in commen with it's use in any other car, including the 1989 Volvo 740 GLE 16-v 2.3-litre motor which also uses twin balance shafts and producess 167-hp in normally aspirated form. Therefore, to suggest a Mitsubishi tool could be used on a Porsche, is pure "shooting in the dark". In other words, there's not a "snowball's chance". The location, bearings, oil delivery, weights involved, manner in which the shafts are driven with a given type of belt and combo, are all different. The "concept" is what is licensed, not the execution. Good luck P

Yup, that was me that replied to you over there We got timing chains on the 2.6l Mitsu. Porsche probably wanted to go the lighter weight, more horsepower, route by doing timing belts.
