cooling fan problems

My 83 944 driver side cooling fan goes on when the engine temperature reaches the 1/2 mark, goes to low mode at engine shutoff and shuts off about 5 minutes later.

The passenger side cooling fan does not come on at all, ever.

When turning the AC on, neither fan goes on, but the compressor clutch engages and cool air comes out.

Please help, thank you.

First you have to decide whether it is getting votage. If you have a voltmeter, you can check this out easily. If it is getting the emf, check the brushes on the motor. I don't know whether they have replaceable brushes or not as I am not familiar with them. Fan on my old MB AC does. Can't be that different. Reason why I don't know for sure is because mine has not broken yet.

I don't have access to a voltmeter, but I do have a battery charger. I connected the output of the battery charger to the passenger side fan and it ran just fine. How should I proceed to diagnose the problem further? Is this a common 944 problem?

I had a problem with my 944 i just replaced the relay... and it seemd to solve the problem ok..... On the 924 i just got pissed and rewired it so that i could manually switch it on and off(with a nifty lil switch in the thingy behind the shift lever).....

When you turn the AC on, the low speed fan is suppossed to come on by default, this function I don't believe is even controled by the control module. If your car is not heating up enough, the highspeed fan won't ever cut on. Try pulling the fuse of your low speed fan and see if the high speed fan comes on, this will tell you if everything is okay and the car is just not getting hot enough. You have a posibility of two problems (could be more, these two are likely). Problem 1: This ones cheap, the little sensor plugged into your radiator on the driver side about 8 inches down controls when the fans cut on, this sensor could be bad for the high speed fan, so replacing this sensor could fix you right up. It's a 20 dollar part. Problem 2: This ones expensive, the fan control module in your fuse box is bad (It's the largest, rectangular one there) It's 140 bucks, and you could swap it with a friends box to see if that helps before buying one.
