trip

I reset my trip odometer when I got gas. It didn't work for about 35 miles. This morning it began to work and it worked for the next 42 miles and it's still working.
  • Anyone else have this happen? Is this gonna be a sporatic thing?
  • Why do I have to have my key on to reset the trip?

Which car?

I unfortunately had a friend reset mine while driving, and now the odometer gear appears to be loose. It registers fine in the city, but stops working at higher speeds on the highway..

I plan to fix it this weekend, that way I figure I won't be off by too much on the odometer.

Not sure about earlier ones but on my S2 the trip meter stopped but the main odometer kept going just fine.

The odometer on the later 944's is programmed to "forget" the miles you drive between home and your mistress. Unless you switch to Wife Version 2.0.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Wife Version 2.0 is Mistress Version 1.0 with an upgrade.

Alrighty, first, the reason the car has to be on. The reset is electric, in case you did not know. The switch activates a solenoid that tugs the reset bar on the trip odometer, the power comes from the accessory circuit.
Fun fact =)
I had mine fail intermittently, got 2000 free km's on the highway, tried to remove the gauge cluster with the steering wheel hub on, got angry at it, gave it a shake, worked flawlessly for 4000km, until on a later gauge cluster removal, I got a connector dirty before re-installing it, and the odometer quit for another few hundred km until I was able to clean it.

It could either be an electrical problem or the odometer gear. Since it occurs only at higher speeds, I am tempted to say it's the gear, typically, if it's electrical, it will fail at lower speeds.

Have you ever noticed that it only stops when you are looking at it?

Yes, it stops the gear while it resets, so, if it's moving, it will usually destroy the gear.

I noticed mine only worked when I watched it, but I started wondering when I drove across the city in only 5 km, and only got 30km to the tank!

Really? I heard it was true only for the early 944's, I have reset mine several times at a low speed, but once I read that it would damage the gear, I stopped.
Good to know it's BS, I really wondered why porsche would design a system that fails if you push a button while you are moving.

Oh you bad boy, how do people like you become so careless.
j/k
Well, it's good to put another 944 myth to rest.
Every time I reset mine when I am rolling, I always say '*****, lucky it didn't break!'

well, I have NO Odom cuz my speedo don't work at all

I do have a GPS that has Odom & Trip

I just wish that my VDO (yellow) clock would work !!!!

I don't wear a watch, so I gotta dig out the cell phone to check the time ( clock on the radio is dependent on the radio working and the lights on the radio being bright enough to see --- another story )
BTW, I gotta flip the lights on/off to MAYBE get radio to work

I just know that when I replace the Speedo cable ( PO said that was cause ) that I am sure to find fubar gear on odometer ( murphy's law )
