Unhappy intermittant tach.

i just had my ac serviced (ouch!) and now i am haveing tachometer problems. when they do a leak check, i believe they look under the dash. could they have disconnected a wire or something?

the tach sometimes works fine but sometimes it does not come on at all. if i hit the right bump, it usually starts.

any sugestions or areas to look at?

i have an 84' 944na

I had an 84 and it did the same thing. Apparently this is pretty common and the consensus solution (short of replacing it) on this board was "..give it a whack.." So whenever I started, I'd tap the dash and she'd come to life.

Its probably a lose ground in the dash. I'd just take 30 minutes to take the whole thing apart and go over it and look for anything not right. But i guess the "whack" approuch is good too. After a while i'm sure it be reaction like turning your lights on or something.

There is a ground bus under the dash in front of the glove box. The glove box doesn't have to come off, but it's rather tight in there. There are 7 circuts grounded there. Might want to check those to since the instrument circut grounds through there.

t2933rm, what year is your 944? If its the 85 1/2 and up, my tach and the speedo goes on and off sometimes. So this is what I do, just hit the trip botton on the vent and the tach should go back on. Try it.
