Post Question Painted 2 of my my wheels...but I used engine paint...

I painted 2 of my wheels with Plasti-Coat engine paint... Alumanum color... Now after i got done i clearcoated them and i read the back and it says that the paint needs to cure....So i said Oh ****..... Since i cant bake my wheel do you think leaving it in the sun will work?

I put it in front of my house in the 95 degree Florida weather... Do you think if it sits for 3 hours it will cure enough?

Cure, doesn't automaticlly mean bake. I'm sure you will be fine if you leave them set. But I think that it would be harmful if you leave in the sun.

you will want to spray clear cote IMMEDIATELY after painting but you have to spray it in the SHADE. it will wrinkle if sprayed in the sun.

Raf944,

I need to paint my Phone dial rims. I have removed all the previous paint on them but just haven't gotten around to re-painting them. Do you recommend the engine paint you used?

THanks

NO NO NO!

dont strip them.. it will take FOREVER to get that crap of with thinner and a rag.. just take sandpaper and go over the paint, and respray.. thinner will make a HORRIBLE mess.

Strip them again. I repainted mine three different times before I was satisfied. Get some kind of aircraft paint remover. Raf, check out my website to see a tutorial on how to remove it.

I used an "aluminum" colored spray paint that I got at the auto parts store. It has a gloss finish, and I put on 2 or 3 coats. I dont remember the brand but it was just normal high quality paint, not specifically engine, wheel or high temp. I used the same paint on a set of wheels on a VW golf I used to have and it lasted a couple of years looking good before I sold it. Granted, they dont use salt on the roads here in Colorado, so I think it helps the paint last longer if you drive in the winter. I used some clear coat over the center caps but not on the wheels themselves. Did'nt strip the wheels or anything, just cleaned them up really well and scuffed the surface with some med grit sandpaper before masking and spraying. do it in the shade and it will work far better. Painting in the sun makes the paint dry too fast, whick screws up the finish. Light coats about 30 minutes apart seems to work well. I like mine a lot.

I put Castrol Degreaser on the paint and it eats it away...then you hose it off...

good work. its important to remove all of the paint from your first attempt. You need to do this because any new paint you try may not compatible over top of the "Plasti-coat" stuff.

When you are all done and the wheel is dry give it a good rubdown with some laquer thinner to remove any traces of the degreaser.

Dude, use the Rustoleum Professional spray paint. I did mine last winter and they look awesome. Can be had at Home Depot. Get all that paint removal crap off & use the Pro series gray primer. I think I used bright aluminum. I've painted alot of rims over the years and this stuff was the best yet. I didn't clearcoat for 2 reasons. Should I chip or scratch the paint I didn't want to deal with removal and re-applying the clear. The paint is strong and durable with a nice gloss so I don't see a need for clear but that's your choise.
