Question removing power steering pump

Has anyone ever done this ? Mine is leaking and the belt is squealing like mad. The tensioner only had one side on it. I bought a turn buckle at Home Depot yesterday, but I don't think that I like how it is on there. The squealing has been reduced by putting that on there. I probably need a new belt.
Anyway, I am thinking about removing the pump altogether. The rack is in good condition and does not leak. What is involved in this ? Is there any potential for damage to the rack ? Can I just cap the hole in the rack ? What about fluid in the rack, how much should be in there ? How would I keep it filled ? Thanks for any suggestions and insight.

You need to run the pressure equalization hoses to each other. You also need to grease the rack up, or if it's not going to see hard use, leave it full with powersteering fluid, that should keep it OK (but don't be mad at me if it doens't in the next 10 billion miles).

Removing the pump/hoses, and keeping pressure equal on both sides of the rack isn't hard, the steering will be though! If you need specific info on how to do that, respond here.

I don't really know, but what would happen if you just took the belt off?

My pump was in the process of being replaced last week, and I can tell you that it is NOT fun to try to parallel park without a PS pump, I guess it might be easier if the hoses were just connected without a pump occluding the flow from one side of the rack to the other ... but I guess Ahmet would know better.

You can just disconnect the pump.... however.

the car will be much harder to stear - perhaps harder than it would be with a manual steering rack.
