Wow .. didn't even think this could happen. I parked my 83 na and noticed that my brake lights were on. Upon further inspection it seems like the brake light switch was not being turned off by the return of the pedal. For those that don't know when u depress your brake pedal there is a switch that is no longer pressed down that causes your brake lights to go on.... foot off the brake, spring pulls it back up and switch is pushed down turning lights off. Anyways, I reached down to see if switch was messed up etc .. and I pulled on the brake pedal which in turn fell off. It seems that the clutch and brake pedals share the same axis ... a bar that travels through the clutch pedal arm, through the brake pedal where it seems to terminate in a cap that is welded onto the brake pedal arm. Now i pushed the brake pedal arm back on the axis and I can now actuate the brakes but two problems:
1. there is some lateral play in the pedal (feels very wobbly), affraid if i step on it quickly i wmight knock it off the pivot rod again, and 2. the brake lights stay on .... maybe the spring needs replacing as well. Is there a way that the brake pedal arm "locks" into place? I didn't see any pins / connectors / fasoners on the floor that might have fallen off. Thanx in advance .... dont like driving it as it feels just a bit unsafe right now (duh) ![]() Mitch |

For God's sake don't drive the car, that's for sure.
#1) You could lose the brake pedal and not be able to stop. #2) With the brake lights on all the time, there is nothing to signal other drivers when you do start to actually apply the brakes. In this case, if someone rear-ends you it will be YOUR fault. You sound as though you're not driving it, but I just thought I should make sure. Aside from getting out the Haynes and looking at that, you're pretty much left with taking it to the mechanic's, towed of course. Aaron

Ok .. question, does the pin / bar (number 8) that passes through both the clutch and brake pedals .. is it to be flush with the left side of the clutch? I think the bar somehow slide to the left ... so that there is only a little nub to wich the brake pedal is hanging onto .. i tried to slide that rod to the right but it wouldn't move. Guess i'll need to remove the whole thing and see if i can get it squared away .. ugh

It looks to me like a simple clip design. Check the rod on the clutch side. It is a pain in the ass spot. Hard to lign things up properly. I'm not sure I would take it all out when your already "half" way there. Try moving things around while pushing the rod to the right to help with the ligning up.
When you do get things squared away check how well the clips are "holding". It's not something you want to let go when comming up to a stop light or aproaching a corner. GL

Ok ... clip (number 9 in diagram) was missing .... must have knocked it off when I put in a new master clutch cylinder last year ans it has taken this long to work its way out (the pin). If anyone else ever has this problem you have to remove the spring assembly that puts return tension on the clutch pedal before you slide the rod around. Using a autozone pos to hold pin in place .. anyone no where you can pick up one of those clips via conventional methods (ie not online) .. and if online does pelican have them? (couldn't find)
Thanx Mitch (who isn't Flinstone'n to brake anymore ![]() |
