Exhaust Leaky

I have an exhaust leak in the 944. Does anybody know how bad this is taking down performance? How much horsepower is lost. I dont know where the hole is... or how big it is... all i hear is a ticking noise that gets faster along with the engine RPM.

Gaskets.

Most likely at the head.

Or one of the manifolds is cracking at the point the two tubes come together into one.

Uhh rock, yours is not a turbo, you are not loosing exhause pressure on the way to the turbo itself, so you are not losing power. Besides, unless it is bloody loud, and you can see exhaust coming out of it, it is not big enough to make a difference. Check where the pipes from #1 and #4 come together, on the underside (exactly where you can't see it!), that's where mine cracked.

Dont these cars rely on some form of back pressure? Wouldn't an exhaust leak change the characteristics of the back pressure?

That is accurate, they depend on backpressure, but the amount of pressure lost to the leak, unless it is very large, would not make any measurable difference. In order for it to make a difference it would have to be about the size of a dime or a nickel.
