Post Transmission Problem

Manual Transmission is totally sticking when upshifting. Downshifting isn't bad. Going from first to second is almost impossible. Third to forth I feel the gears grinding. 5 speed was fine last week, noy sure what happened.

Added Redline and it did nothing.

87 944S with 98K miles.

Any other ideas?

What is price damage for new clutch. Transmission????

I am having timing belt/water pump done next week. Any mechanic time saving having both done at same time?

Anything else I should have done while I have this much of the car taken apart?

Thanks
Mike

It really sounds like a worn clutch, but do you have any slip at higher RPM? Also I don't think the mechanic would save any time doing it all at once. They are completely different repairs. But the clutch on your year is a bit easier than the 2.5 or the turbo. Can run you between $900 and as much as $2000 depending on the parts required.

No slip at all. Just real tough(almost impossible) to change gears.

It also could be synchronizer. Try to identify the problem first. To check clutch, you can down shift from 4th or 5th to 3rd at around 60mph. If you feel strong speed reduce like break feeling, your clutch is ok. Or do a quick full gas at a slightly up-hill road at 4th or 5th gear. If you feel suddenly speed pick up, your clutch should be ok.
Don't grind your transmission. It will do some permanent damagne to your trans. You can always switch gears from 1st to 5th without clutch when the car is moving, as well as down shift. But it's just a temporary solution.
