Smile Race Seats

I have been looking at racing seats for my 1987 924S, Does anyone have a set installed in there porsche, (any PICS)
also whats a good brand and how hard are they to install. One of the biggest problem Im having is finding a place that sells the seats and will let you try them out. Any ideas??

We've had decent luck with recaro seats. You will need to get special rails to mount them in the cars. A bit pricy though - $1200 or so for a good set.

Used 911 Sport seats are also an attractive option for a little less money

For a while I had a pair of Cobra Clubman seats (made in the UK but probably available in the US). Slotted for a four point harness and with their own seat rails. I paid something in the range of £500 new (pair with rails). They're very comfortable and well used in club racing events here. Nothing flash but durable and attractive.

I've heard LOTS of good thing about BRIDE. Never heard of them in a Porsche so I don't know how well they'll fit. Expensive though $1150 a seat.

If you are in New Jersey, check out Stable Energies in Garfield, or Powertech in Rockaway. Both sell race seats, and both have some on the floor that you can sample.

Also: keep in mind that for street driving, you cannot use racing harnesses. Since the inner seat belt mounting point on our seats is actually mounted to the stock seats, you will need to figure out a way to mount a unit the the torque tube tunnel.

Sparcos and Recaros are great, but they are pricey.

The only way I would ever do the swap is if I knew that I would be acquiring a sweet weight loss.

Does anyone know the weights of the stock seats (early car) vs. a Recaro or Sparco?

I can pick up both my seats at once, 1 in each hand so i assume my seats are MUCH lighter.

yo z-man, what do you mean the mounting point is on the seat??? im my 88 i have harnesses and the bottom 2 of the 4 go right into the floor and the upper 2 of 4 go to where the rear seat belts used to mount....

and ive had racing seats in another car, tenzo-r they were comfortable but they faded really quick, everyone ive talked to with these seats has the same problem. but they are some of the cheapest reclining racing seats you can get.

Asking if you should replace that timing belt is like asking if you should re-use a condom that may have in hole in it with a hooker.

What ever you do you will need new rails and are subject to the seats mounting points. That said the seat MFG will have the rails needed to install such as Corbeau does. I can get rails for Corbeau for around 50 bucks or so.
You will also want the seat compatable with your harness, meaning shoulder/submarine strap slots.
Reclining seats will cost more and are not race approved and if they are allowed a seat back brace is needed.Sman

Are you referring to a 4 point harness? Do you mean "sub belts" for the bottom two? Typically, with a 5 or 6 point harness, the lap belts are mounted to the exsisting seat belt anchor points, which are located:
a. Outside anchor point: on the inside rocker panel
b. Inside anchor point: attached to the seat.

I just mounted a set of Corbeau TRS seats in my 924 I got from work. Take a look at the picture below:
http://members.shaw.ca/minus/finished1.JPG

I haven't had a chance to go for a drive (its snowing bad here) but they are ALOT more supportive and you sit a little higher (you realy sink in to the origonal 924 seats) Iv sat in just about every Corbeau seat so if you are thinking of a pair I can probaly answer your questions.

I work over at www.virtualracerx.com and can get you a 10% discount off our website prices, maybe more depending on what you order. Corbeau can drop ship to you also since your not in Canada so shipping prices would be the same no matter where you order from, the closest Corbeau distributer would ship to you. Let me know if your intrested, Mike.

Minus brings up an excellent point. I have an OMP seat and at first install it too sat to high so I had to make my rail out of sheet steel because when I tried with rails my knees hit the wheel and I am only 5-9 and slender.
I think the stock seats sit the lowest of all seats available IMHO. Sman
