There is a guy at school who has informed my friend he wants to race me. I was like, I'll race'em from 80 or something just kidding around but it seems the camaro owner DIDN't like that, and is REALLY Wanting to race me for some reason... Would I be wasting my time? What's the 1/4 mile on a V6 Camaro? 0-60?

I think the latest 3800's v6 is 200 hp, not sure which one this test is on.... sounds like he's about as fast, maybe alil faster from the numbers you've been posting 0-60 http://home.earthlink.net/~jfgalbraith/qtimes.html

Hi Craig,
Don't know 0-60 or quarter-mile for a newer V-6 Camaro, but I do know they weigh about 3300 lb. and have 200 bhp from 3.8 liters of good ol' Murican pushrod V-6. That's 16.5 lb/bhp. Yours makes about 150 stock; with the upgrades you've done, you might, maybe, possibly have 165 at the flywheel. With 2900 lb. of 944, that's 17.5 lb/bhp, so I'd say the Camaro has the slight edge. But older Camaros (pre-'95, if I remember right) of the 1984-to-present generation had the 3.4-liter V-6 with about 160 bhp. You could probably take him. Square off at a sanctioned Saturday-night drag night...don't want to condone such foolishness on the street. --Doug |

You should be ok. My brother has one, it a 4.3L 210hp or so. They load the rear ends with 3:73 gears. I can take him, but I am supercharged. The V6's are really sad, kinda a sad end to a long tradition of V8 muscle cars. The 4.3L is a derivitive on the 350 power plant, basically just a 350 with the rear two cylinders chopped off.

The last gen. Camaro tends to hit a brick wall around 75. It doesn't accelerate all too well around 100. There is a guy on the '11 board with a wide body conversion and a lot of unsprung weight with rear tires in the 320 range with a stock SC engine with around 180 HP that whipped a Z-car after around 110.

I've raced a friends on several occasions, here are my thoughts:
You should have him at the very beginning, as the 944 seems to hook up better for a launch, through second it's very close, when first shifted into 2nd, the camaro(or firebird) seems to pull away slightly, but near the top of 2nd, and specially into 3rd the 944 pulls away. Keep in mind there are many variations, this was my car with me driving against a friend, with ofcourse him driving... I HAD a limited slip, and good tires, which must've helped with the launch. He had a few mods, including a cat back, but I don't think he had anything too serious in that thing. PS: It handled surprisingly nicely, but it was lowered at least 2-3 inches, and had a VERY low body kit on it. I've raced him around long sweepers too, I couldn't pull away from him without scaring myself... Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... You don't have to say anymore, I am not one that needs an analysis from ground up ;-]. I just thought they had like 300HP or something outrageous. hahahaha |

You left out some key details, I mean if it's an older camaro (like 87-91 I think) it has 135 hp. Plus if it is an auto you won right there ya know?

93-96 Camaro V6 had 160 hp. 0-60 about 9 sec
97-01 Camaro V6 has 200 hp. 0-60 in 7.3 sec Automatics are a bit slower. I don't think a 944 na (0-60) has a chance against a newer V6 5 spd Camaro. ------------------ 83 944 |

Ahmet, it was actually meant towards Craig but I was interested in what the one you raced was like as well. How are your supercharger plans going? Anyway, thanks for the info tham, the post '93 Camaros (and firebords) v6's have 135. I used to own a firebird so I did the research on them.

Beleive that Camaro that daughter's fince used to have was 96. He asked me about wife's 924t, "That's just a 4 cylinder. It runs a lot stronger than my V6".
It seems like American cars built in late 80's & 90's start dragging an anchor or something around 70. drew1 |

Anyway, the supercharger thing is NOT going right now (which is how I planned it), hopefully I'll be putting $2k in the bank tomorrow... I may start as early as next week, but all the sources I can find a supercharger from so far have been hard to deal with. I mean I've found several that would work at various places (all online though), but I just refuse to buy from somebody who uses lines like 'you know you need this item', or 'you know me', neither will I pay a dime to somebody who's not answering my e-mails, let's not forget the 0 feedback people... Don't discount the 200-bhp 3800 V-6 Camaros. The Series II version of this engine breathes a lot better at higher rpm than the earlier versions. And horsepower is horsepower. They've got better than 200 lb-ft of torque, too, so they get off the line easily and repeatably. So I'd practice cutting the light...it's your best hope.

Better yet, race him on a bumpy road. Your IRS will hook up better than his heavy live axle that'll be skittering all over the place. Camaros are best on smooth roads.

Better yet, race him onna bumpy curvey where his front heavy car will eventually mess up. If you want a 0-60 car... go get a camaro or mustang v8, they are much better 0-60 cars, but since you got a porsche, enjoy what they are made for... Driving on all roads at all times.... especially the twisties... that's where these cars are supreme.... not the straights.... 50/50 is da way to go!!
