Post 87 944 N/A Gas mileage.

I've been burning Shell Premium 93 octane gas since I got the car 5/96...I am presently getting only 16.44 mpg. Everything is stock except for the Russell (kinda like that ring ) modification to make my own throttle response cam. Everything seems to be tuned right on the money. What kind of mileage do our cars usually get in city driving? Thanks.

Dennis Russell

I get 21-22 mpg city, about 30 on the highway at 70 mph, around 25 mpg at 90+ mph (on a recent trip from orlando to atlanta i got 25 mpg averaging right at 100 mph for the trip up, orlando to atlanta in 5 hrs ... i know crazy but the road opened up for me until i got to atlanta, that's when the local county cop got me) Mine is an 85.5 NA.

I've gotten over 37+mpg on the highway, but can go down to around 8mpg on track, so I guess it really depends on how you drive the car.

I do a lot of waiting (as in idling), about 20 minutes a day. Could that be the cause of my low gas mileage? Or.....something else?

hell yeah!! sittin around goin nowhere will make you have lower gas milage. You never said what you got on the highway... that should be around 35 if you can go 55 mph, personally I got a problem driving that slow. But like I said I get around 30 on the highway usually, 4th gear in the mountains doing 45-70 mph got me 29 mph over 250 miles last fall. The throttle mod might make you get bad economy too, until you get used to using it. I can see where someone would be dumping alot of fuel needlessly because it's so much more sensitive at slow speeds.

Jacobs energy coil, jacobs wires, splitfire plugs, synthetic engine/tranny oil, and the car is lowered. There's also no cat.

On my recent Florida to Colorado road trip in my 87NA I averaged about 38mpg over 2200 miles, entirely highway. No mods at all at that point, just a good state of tune.I averaged about 75 or 80 mph. It does drop to about 20-25 around town, tho.

My 1987 924S (same engine, etc. as the 944) gets good gas mileage, especially considering the cars performance. I haven't been keeping accurate records, but I'm getting at least 25 mpg on average... and this includes some highway driving and a lot of city driving... and I fequently drive the car quite hard too. For normal highwayb driving, it's clearly getting at least 30 mpg.

According Michael Cotton's Porsche 924/944 book the combined city/highway gas mileage of the UK spec 944 was 26.2 mpg (as tested by Auto magazine). Also, he says that the Porsche 2.5 liter 944 engine was noted for its fuel economy, especially considering its horspower/torque power output which is similar to a 6 cylinder engine.

If you are only getting 16.44 mpg, then either you are doing one heck of a lot of idling, or there is something wrong (in my opinion). Sorry, I'm no mechanic, so I have no idea where to check.

Yeah, I've been fiddling with that problem as well for quite a while, and the milage was really bad (about 10mpg in the city, 84 944NA), but then I found out that my AFM was the culprit, where the PO must have played with it to richen the mixture. So I knocked it back about 5 teeth, and now I get about 16 to 20mpg with mixed Highway/city driving, but I live in Boston, where there is ALOT of stop and go traffic, so I lose most of the gas idling ...

I'm getting my inspection renewed soon, so I'll find out if my mixture is still too rich, then I can knock it down further to get even better milage.

With my 1989 S2, I averaged 26.6 mpg and a speeding ticket on a 1350-mile trip from San Antonio to So Cal. Steady between 80-85 mph on the Interstates (w/ occasional blast to 100-110). Ambient temp was between 105 and 118 degrees, so the a/c was on the whole way. Haven't kept track of city mpg, but I'd guess it's around 18-20 with a combination of "cruise" and "inspired" modes of throttle. Love the 944's big fuel tank--gives excellent range.

Not a guzzler, but not an economy car either!

Most of my driving is city driving but I still average between 22 and 25 MPG. Getting ready to replace the O2 sensor so hopefully I can pick up a few more miles.

One more vote for 20 in city, 30 on highway. Dennis -- sounds to me like you're feeling that your mileage was low was right on.

I do notice fumes from the cat every now and then. Sulpher like smell. Especially after some harder than normal driving. I'll try another O2 sensor and recheck. Thanks all.

"...I do notice fumes from the cat every now and then"

Maybe a clogged cat?

No.....if it is clogged I'll leave it clogged. It just sounds so g-o-o-o-o-d. Exhaust flows to freely for it to be clogged. I only get the smell if I drive it real hard. We don't have any emissions standards here to meet.

My 951 is supposed to have a 21 gallon tank? Is this true.... I know my guage is wrong, and will go after the sender this weekend. When it gets in the red, I fill up , but can only put in about 15 gallons... Secondly, I cant leave the gas nozzle in the neck and walk away becuase it wont shut off automatically.. It prefers to spray gas everywhere... I must look like a fool with my ear to the car trying to hear when it is getting full... Anyone else have this problem???
