Question My mechanic thinks "droan noise" is coming from turbo?

Porsche questions 9/6/01

For the list:

1. My mechanic just drove with me for about 15 minutes to get the noise to occur. It did, the droan in front of us, in 4th or 5th gear, but now also in neutral with a little revving. He checked the drivetrain and said there’s nothing wrong there. He thinks it is most probably something to do with the Turbo, something binding up maybe or something with the turbo exhaust. So he wanted to know if I was ready for him to dig deeper. He said it would be about 6 to 7 hours work and that once he got in there, he is sure that he can find the cause of this noise. It is a very obvious annoying droan sound. My brother in law , who sold me the car, also said that he was starting to hear some noise, and thought it was probably the turbo going bad.
I gave the mechanic the go ahead and am anxious to have it fixed.

Can I get your thoughts? Does this sound like it’s the turbo?

If the turbo does need to be replaced, where should we go for parts? This mechanic is a very nice guy, friendlier than any other guys I’ve worked with in the past. He is willing to work with me on parts, if I can find parts more affordably than he can.

PS Mechanic had a couple of 911’s on the lot. Says he worked for a Porsche dealer, has certificates from Porsche dated l990 on the office wall (along with certificates for Audi), Porsche emblems on the office windows. Has been in business for many years now. Used to work on Maseratis and other exotic cars , too. Understands that not all of us are rich guys who can spend tons on these cars, but still want to have enjoyment driving them. His labor rate is $60/hr. which isn’t bad for the NY area. And he always seems willing to give me and other customers the “time of day”.

I’m curious about the experiences you guys/gals have had with shops in your area? I can do some maintenance myself, but have learned not to mess around with stuff I’ve never done before.

PS. I even asked him, if I “kept my mouth shut”, could I observe the work, get an education. He said he’d be comfortable with calling me down periodically to look at his progress. Not bad. Most guys don’t want any part of a customer hanging around.

I have a mechanic like that here too - he runs a private garage that works only on Porsche. He's real good to order parts from (he gets them at dealer cost) even if you are not having him install the parts. He is very free with the technical advise too...
