Opinions needed:

Hi Guys,

Im driving an 85.5 944 non-turbo.

While accelerating I hear a tapping/clicking/clunking sounding noise that increases in speed as I increase the speed of the car. I have tried turning with the windows down to see if the noise is different depending on which way im turning but generally the noise is the same when I accerate, turn or reverse as long as im in gear. I can pop it into neutral and rev the engine with no noises.

Now I have read posts with a similar sounding problem and it sounds like the cv joints are done.

My question is, how many cv joints are there, in most cases do they all need to be fixed or could it be just 1? A friend mentioned something about rotating them instead of replacing them, any comments on this? And finally, how much does this generally cost?

Any comments much appreciated.

Many thanks,

JimJim

There are 2 CV's on each drive shaft for a total of four, it might only be one joint that's bad, or they all might be close behind also. You can replace the joints one at a time, or you can buy complete preassembled drive shafts. 190 will get you a remanufactured drive shaft (you have a left and a right), cv kits run around a 100.

You can sometimes rotate them from side to side. But, If they're making that much noise you might consider replacment. Take them off and swivel them around, if you feel roughness or sandpaper feel, replace them. It's usually the inner one on the drivers side becase it the closest CV to the exhaust.

They're relativly inexpensive (and easy) to swap out the whole axle assembly. (and a greasey mess to change just the joints.)
Cost? just a guess $150 per side.

If you choose to swap them, put the outside of the drivers side to the outside of the passenger side and visa-versa. That way they are turing in opposite directions. It does work if they are just worn a little.
