Post How to get the odometer out on late 85?

Yeah my mile ticker just stuck on 180061 comming home today. I tried to reset it but no luck. Do I have to pull the dash out to get to the instrument clusters? I have looked around for some info but came up with none. The haynes manual only has instructions for the pre 85 1/2-2.

Thanks

ven

Search the files, i had the same thing. I think it was called odometer. sorry to answer like this but i dont remember the link that was in that thread, but there is one in there that tells exactly how to do it. All i remember is that you have to get the wheel off, with a 24mm socket i think, and then just take the dash off......

It is pretty easy to get the odo out, just take off the wheel and carefully remove the bezel around the guages and A/C vents. Before you do, try driving around and resetting the trip meter every time you stop. My odo stopped like that and started up again after 4 or 5 tripmeter resets.

The September 2001 issue of Excellence magazine has pictures and instructions for removing the steering wheel, bezel and gages in their article "Saving Faces". Sorry I donn't have a scanner or I would scan and send you the article.

1985.5 944na, had my instrument cluster in and out approx. 8 Times for Odometer Problem before replacing the Speed/Odometer assembly. Never removed Steering wheel and it took me about 15/20 min. removal or install time.

Cebu:
How do you get the instrument cluster out? I've gotten to it, (trying to hunt down a flickering dash light), but it seems the space is too tight to squeeze the cluster though. My '89 has an airbag equipped steering wheel, and I'd rather not mess around with it.

Thanks,
-Zoltan.

My method of Removing the Instr. Cluster 1985.5(1).Remove instr. trim panel. 2).Remove 4ea. screws that mount the instr cluster.3). gently move instr cluster toward the steering wheel. 4).You should be able to see elec connectors (2ea) on right side rear of instr cluster, and (1ea) bottom center rear of cluster, unsnap connectors. 5) rotate opposite (LT.)end of cluster outward and unsnap elec. connector(1ea.), rotate rt. end of cluster out reward and remove cluster.
