Talking 944 turbo questions

I have the oppertunity to purchase an '88 944 turbo. the asking price is $3500 canadian
what problems should I look for?
I know VW's very well, And I'm told that the 944 is basically made up of a combination of VW and Audi parts. Any one know what car the engine is the same as?

That price is way too low for a 944 Turbo in decent condition. If this is a good car, that is quite a deal.

That said the engine is an all-aluminum 2.5 ltr Porsche designed and built engine. The rear mounted transaxle is Audi-made and the cv joints are very similar to VW units of the era. The suspension architecture is similar to VW but has mostly Porsche parts I think.

yea it is a low price, it is one of those deals.
a kid I know was going to buy it from his neighbour for a sweet deal, but after shelling out some of the money to hold it, his parents told him "no way".

I had talked to him about it before, so he offered it to me first.

I'm going to check it out on monday.

the rear suspension is nearly isentical to a vw beetle, except the later 944's used alloy trailing arms insead of steel. the front suspension shares some parts in common with a super beetle (some parts will swap onto a SB with little work)
I was told that the engine was based on an Audi Block, but perhaps that was the earlier 944's or 924's

any one know?

The 944 2.5 engine only came in the 944 or 944 turbo aka 951, no other production car built by Porsche Audi or VW had that engine. The transaxle is a Audi design and built by Audi, the CV on the 944 fit some type 4 buses, there are other CV's that will fit but you better check the degree of travel in the CV's. I don't think any other major part's were shared with anything else except the 928 and 968 and a few 911's, maybe some minor parts such as buttons or electric motors, lights are off the generic VW Audi part's bin. The only part that I know of that was shared by MB and Audi was the ps reservoir. I maybe wrong tho!

That price may be concealing a deeper truth or two about the real condition of the car. Check the following link for some help in how to check a 944/951:

You should find the information here to be helpful.

$3500 Canadian sure sounds like the wholesale value of the car. It maybe an insurance wright off or something major is wrong with it. BUT then again it could be a deal. Remember that most people donn't have a clue what these cars are worth. Go have a look but if you are interested get a mechanic who works on 944s to look it over before buying it.

I think 3500 Canadian is about 2700 US , could be wrong. If it is a good car buy it fast. I have a NA 944 and a 951 and I would buy it in a second if it was here and have anothr 951. The 70's 924 (not 87 and 88 924S)used an audi cast iron block engine. The 944 engine is an all aluminum engine by Porsche. If you are thinking you can get VW parts cheap for a 951 forget it, nothing fits, like someone said maybe a light switch or bulb and a fuse or relay.
