Post Hatch light question

I know the hatch light comes on when the front doors open, but is it suppost to in my early 85' when I open the hatch?

Yes, it's supposed to come on when the hatch is opened on early cars. I don't know where the switch is though, I've never looked for it because mine works fine.

The 'switch' is built into the base of the passanger side shock. When the hatch is opened, a strip moves away from under the copper strip (letting it come in contact with the shock body, which is the ground).

That is weird, mine is on the drivers side, but that should not matter. Doesn't the defrost work through that also? How would defrost work if the circuit is not grounded when the door is closed?

Defrost SHOULD BE the driver's side, with no switch, and interior light switch on the right side.

Aren't the defrost and the light on the same circuit?
