Post tranny only shifts to 3rd and 4th!! help!!

two days ago as i left work the car would only shift back and forth between 3rd and 4th! there is no left to right gate at all!it move side to side with no resistance! only for and aft! has anybody had this before? or know what mite be broken? Im not familier with the workings of the shift mechinism on this porsche(early '85 944) any help out there? Thanks, Bob

Maybe, you have something in your clutch that's binding up the engagement. (peice of rubber/spring maybe?) Try pumping the clutch some and re-engaging it into another gear, then start planning on replacing the clutch disc. That's my only real guess...

Your shifting linkage is loose, probably at the shift lever. Remove the boot and stuff from the console and you will see the problem. It's an easy fix.

Get under the car and try to check the linkage on top of the tranny. Have a friend to move the stick and look for anything that's lose or broken.
Hopefully you find something here, otherwise it might be something broken inside the tranny or some clutch related problem as Craig944 suggested.

Check the pointy bolt on trans linkage at trans. Also the ball bolt inside the rubber gromlets on pass side top of trans could be broke.
