Windshield compatability and other ?s
Next month I'd like to get the 944 painted. While I'm at it, I figure I'd replaced the windshield. It's got a crack running from the side to the top corner, very small and barely noticeable but "while I'm in there..." I see lots of parts cars on the "For Sale" forum so I figure finding the windshield will be easy, but what model years are compatible with my '83? Will a 924 screen fit as well? How much do they run?
Also, where will I find the best instructions for removing my lenses, door handles, and mirrors - is Haynes good enough? I haven't picked up a copy yet... Emanuel

924 glass and early 944 (up through early 1985) are compatable and interchangable.
You can get one from Autolite new for about $400 installed - it isn't "factory" glass but more than adequate. After late 1985, the windshields had an antenna built in. Hayners manual is fine for the basics like light and handle removal. AFJuvat

Damn - $400? I paid $260 installed to replace the one in my 911 last year, after my girlfriend attempted to remove some glue residue from a parking ticket she got with a scouring pad.
Thanks for the reply. Hoping to have the old dog presentable by Easter - paint and new carpet and dash cover in by then. Emanuel

$175 in souther California for an 83 (early) windshield.
The only difference in the early and late windshields is the addition of the laminated antenna. Both are the same shape. There is about $120 of spacers and trim that make it flush with the body. This may be an extra cost is if the installer can't reuse the spacers and trim.
