Unhappy rubbing sound coming from tranny area

when i take the car out of gear, mainly in the top gears (1, 3, 5), i hear a rubbing sound. thats the best way i know how to describe it.
it just started today all of a sudden
it doesnt get any quieter as the tranny warms up. it hasnt been any harder to get into gear lately.
any ideas? im hoping it could be the linkage rubbing on something

There is a rubber plug in the spare tire wheelwell - at least there is one on my 951. The plug fell out once allowing a scraping/hissing noise to start. Plug faces front right at rear of tranny. Hopefully, this is your problem.

there is a hole at the very bottom of the sapre tire wheel well. i assumed this was supposed to be there.
is there a plug at the front right and a hole at the bottom or only the plug you mentioned?

Yes the hole at the bottom is to drain water out. There should be a plug in it that lets water pass. Mine also has a larger plug left of center in the well about 1/2 way up. It is in the center of the car and faces the rear of the tranny. It is this plug that fell out on mine. As I don't have carpeting and the entire rear of my track car is stripped, I could hear the tranny quite well with the plug out. It made a hissing/scraping noise. At first I thought my tranny was short for this world - that is until I found the plug missing.
