Question Header question

I received my MSDS ceramic coated header last week. As you know, the color of this header is snow white due to the coating. I currently have a couple of small oil leaks. Is it alright to go ahead and put the header on? Will the oil mess up the ceramic coating? Will the header turn a darker color after use anyway or will it stay white (except for my leaking oil getting on it)?

Thanks,

Steve (1989 944na)

Hey Steve! Where'd you get the headers from and how much? I would like to get some new ones that won't rust like the stock headers. Does anyone know if they would fit an 84' ?

Thanks Steve!

Does anyone know if 944's came with stainless steel headers? My 85.5 seems to have them, they definately aren't cast iron. The records with the car I thought were complete, but it's possible that one of the 3 prev owners replaced the factory one with stainless.

Mine look exactly like that. Perhaps I mistook the ugly colour for rust. Anyway.....does that mean that mine are probably okay?

thay are stock, and yes, they are cast iron. They have had some weld repairs done to them though. They tend to crack over time. All 2.5 944 headers are interchangeable. They are NOT swappable with any other model though(S,S2,turbo). The ceramic coating will stay white for quite a while.

Mine from MSDS cost $200 plus $89 for the ceramic coating. And yes, they are snow white.

No. They are cast iron with a ceramic coating.
As far as tuning, you would have to call or e-mail MSDS to find out about that.

Obin,

How old were his headers when he took this photo. I would expect after a year or so with a lot of use that they would look like this. If the header pictured is almost new - then I would have a problem. MSDS says they have a 'special way' to apply the cermamic coating so that it will last. I guess i'll see huh.

Someone told me that the main reason that they coat the headers with ceramic was for more even heat dispersion not to stop rust.

Sometimes the aftermarket headers do not last too long they develope cracks or rust out early. So you may want to hang on to the original as they are known to stick around for a while.

he didn't have a digital camera, so i took the pictures for him and sent him the URL. the headers were bought in 1999, so they were 2 years old. the manufacturer said that they would last A LOT longer with that special coating though. he wanted the pics so he could complain that the headers looked so bad. there were leaks and holes in them which were not only hurting performance... but making the car sound bad.
