i have a haynes manual but i dont have the factory manual. 2 questions...where is the emergency crank located for the sunroof and where is the motor located? also, what is the proper procedure for detaching the sunroof? is it a two man operation? i dont need the info now but i figured i'd better be prepared!

1. Crank and motor are in the back (hatch area) behind the carpet on the left side. You need a socket to crank it manually (27mm?). You might have to remove a plastic cover - I can't remember.
2. Not sure my roof works properly, but what I do is unclip the front clips, raise the roof about half way, and from outside, I jiggle the roof gently until I get it to release from the toothed risers. Then I tilt the roof to vertical and pull straight up to disengage it from the front latches. I do this alot, and it's a one person job.

As for #2, I've never tried taking it of while the lifting arms are engaged. Instead I retract the arms, release the forward levers, then (from the outside) push up the back of the sunroof and slide it back to disengage the deflector. It's heavy, but manageable for one person.

Yep, I as well retract the arms, but I lift it part-way out from the inside, so the back lip is just resting on the roof itself. Much easier to grab from the outside.

I had a feeling it was supposed to work that way. Mine doesn't. When my arms are retracted, they are still engaged.

Are you retracting via the switch or manually with a wrench? If by switch, are you retracting by pressing the "up" part of the switch while the key is in position 1? (Of course you probably have a three position ignition switch, so I'm not sure if you need to be in position 1 or 2 to retract.) Anyway the lesson learned is that the retract function does not work with the key in the normal running position. If your arms still don't retract, they are mis-aligned.
It is confusing to use the "up" switch to retract the arms. Another Porsche engineering marvel.

Since your lifting arms are not retracting you need to go here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/944_Sunroof/944_sunroof.htm

Switch position 1, you say? Yeah, I'm an idiot. Mine works perfectly when I do that. Thanks, guys.
