master/slave cylinders.

as if i did'nt have enough trouble with the con-rods, now i find a nice wet spot under the gas pedal ! yet again!!
i have had my 944 for about 3.5 years, and this will be the THIRD time i am changing the master/slave cylinder. WTF, are these components made out of toffee, or some substance similiar?? this is beyond a joke. are there upgrades to these items,or do i have to put up with what looks like substandard components. come on, 3 times in as many years. Britwrench/AF JUVAT/SO-CAL, or anyone else with "inside" knowledge, whats up with these parts??
for info, dealer installed first time, and the master lasted 6months!!!
bob.

I replaced both my Master and Slave Clutch Cylinder withing 2 months of owning my 944. I sold the car a year later and within days it went out on the new owner. Mine was a '83. I don't beleive I'll ever by a 944 again prior to '88. Everytime I fixed something, I swear I would find two new things wrong with the damn car.

Yup. Same story here.

I suspect that these parts sit on a shelf for several years in a warehouse where the seals dry-rot and/or age.

Next time either cylinder blows I think I'm going to try rebuilding them with fresh O-rings and a good hone.

Why not rebuild instead of replace? I've rebuilt the clutch master and slave cylinders on an early and late car and saved a good chunk of change.

NAPA has the master cylinder kits. Just ask for their part #1899: Clutch Master Kit. With a AAA discount my cost was $18.20.

For the slave kit you need part #CSK103545 from PartsAmerica.com Cost is $16.52 plus shipping.

Rebuilding will get you back on the road for under $40.00

Same here! Ive had to replace at least one a year since ive had mine, some times two a yr, and yes all my adjustments are good and I always replaced all the fluid. I cant figure it out. Last yr I went through 3 masters.

So, I am thinking that there must be a "leak" in the system somewhere that is allowing moisture or moist air into it.

There is no way these components should go bad that quickly.
The "shelf life" idea is a pretty good one though.

I think that a rebuild is probably the way to go but should not be done if the insides are pitted from corrosion or too worn.

Anyone have a link to a rebuild write-up?

The rebuild is fairly simple if you've ever done a brake master cylinder.

Basically, you remove the cylinders (the master is a PITA!), remove the internals, clean the bores, install new seals/boots/gromets, 'bench bleed' the cylinders, install the cylinders, and finally bleed the system.

You might want to check either Clarks Garage (http://www/clarks-garage.com), or the Pelican Parts Tech articles for more detail.
