3000 Mile RoadTrip

Well there seems to be pretty good road trip in the near future for me and the 88NA. I'll be traveling from Raliegh, NC to Portland, OR. Now here comes the meat!! What "must haves" should a guy bring, and any suggestions on route detours would be great. I'm planning on posting a photo history of the trip as it progress, if anyones interested.

TIA
Rob

Just did Kansas City to Montreal, Canada this fall in my newly acquired 911SC. Troubleless.

- Brings the basics : fuses, relays, basic tools, etc.
- know your car and practice diagnosing troubles (you wont believe how effective it is. Like : OK the headlights wont turn on, why?
- know and bring your manual(s)
- cell phone
- maps
- build a network on your presumed road path

Dont try to be too precise in your road choices, anything can happen. And after a long day behind the wheel, you may not have the desire for that backroad that says "beautifull sightings".... Which i did, using the state highways almost exclusively, like the infamous RTE66!!!!

Liked it so much that i am shopping for a 944NA on the west coast to drive back.... to east coast! Any seller?

You also might want to bring coolant, some oil, and duct tape.

Do you need a list of Porsche shops on the way out there?
I know of one in all of nebraska, just off I-80 at Kearney.

Hey thanks for all input! Looks like both rear cubies and spare tire bin will be full of all those and then some!

Thanks Again!

Would you guys be interested in a picture post of the trip?
And if you know of any get togethers along the way I'd sure like to try and make 'em

I've driven round trip Boston to Orlando, FL as well as boston to Hilton Head, NC in the last year. My 944 did a great job. Took along a decent toolkit, goodnplenty, and a wad of "emergency cash." FWIW, now would be a good time to give your car a nice tune-up, etc. I mean, for instance, if your O2 sensor isn't working right you should replace it now, since it will more than pay for itself in increased gas economy! Also nice to have a good feeling for the shape your car is in before you embark on such a journey.
Also bring a trash bag for your car, it's amazing how much stuff I accumulate on long drives.....fast food bags, gas receipts, stripper's phone numbers, all sorts of stuff!

If you're going to Portland, I'd say a whole heck of a lot of silicone sealant and a raincoat and an umbrella. It'll likely rain so much you'll find all kinds of new and exciting leaks you didn't realize you had. On the bright side, the car will be clean!

I used to live there, I know.

Actually, there's a bunch of Porsche shops in Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska, a couple dealers here in Omaha. Bryan, let me know if you're having trouble finding some.

That would be handy, a list of Porsche shops along a route you're taking. Good idea.

If you are a PCA member, then take the annual Panorama edition that has all the local club officer's phone #'s etc... They are a great resource for local repair knowledge if you're stuck on the road!!

I am not a big fan of car bras. But my next x-country trip, I am going to put one on. Had to respray my nose after a Raleigh and back to LAS last year.

Otherwise, everyone's suggestions sounded great.

I put a Sirius reciever in too. Tennesee and Arkansas were just too big to go without intelligent audio.

Lots of film or extra memory for the digital camera, a blanket (in case you end up having to spend the night somewhere cold in the car - it happens). If possible leave a lot of time and minimal agenda, it'll come to you as you go.

My wife & I took a 3-month road trip / camping trip after I finished grad. school, travelling to different cities, seeing what they had to offer, doing job interviews, etc. It was an awesome experience! We saw more in those three months probably than most people see in their lives. Painted desert, grand canyon, Sierra Nevada Mountains, John Muir wilderness, Yosemite, the Saint Louis arch, Phoenix, Texas, . . . we had some specific things we needed to do but largely just made it up as we went along. It was fantastic, and if you get a national parks pass (about $50 I believe) you can stay at all the parks for very little cost (if you're into that) - certainly a heck of a lot more economical than dumping money into hotels.

Good luck, send pics.

Oh, and make sure your tires are in good shape
