porsche in a uhaul story (pretty long)
first im new, hello! i have a 84 944 non turbo w/53k miles and the clutch went out over 4 years ago (a result of me letting all my friends borrow the car)anyways i went to inquire about a new clutch and wow over 7 bills for the parts only,i think not it'll sit. so it chilled untouched or covered in the drive for four years until i was moving from ohio to s.c I was gonna leave the car for the new homeowners to deal with but they said its pretty but get it out of here, so i called a towing co. and ordered me a flatbed, he came and drug the poor car up on the bed and then I had him back up to the 24 foot uhaul I had lined the floors up and rolled her inside, a perfect fit with plenty of room to spare. drove it to s.c got it off (the same way it went on) washed it and fell in love again, put a hot battery in it turned the key looked at the guages and it had 1/2 tank of unstabalized 87 octane four year old gas that smelled like vinegar. then i remembered this was a porsche and cranked it over fired up like it was warm! no smoke either, ran great as a matter of fact. decided it was clutch time, started looking in local dollar deals paper for some good used tires to get me by. no luck on the tires but i saw a ad that read, "porsche clutch brand new with extra parts $30 or best offer" so i thought hmm i need a clutch bad, and heres one in the paper. hmm you know its NOT for a 944 for sure, nobody can be that lucky.... i called anyway, turns out the parts were for a 924s , my lucky day so i went and the guy had a clutch disc, flywheel, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and a crankshaft all brand new and $30 bucks for it all. i gave him $50 and told him to buy his wifew lunch on me, they worked great and the car is greatful... i live 700 miles from my hometown and when i was at the clutch guys house i notice his corvette in the garage and tell him ive seen the car somewhere before, i'm sure of it, i'm like yes my old neighbor in ohio jim rimmick used to own a car exactly like this one, except this was a one of a kind mako and there couldnt be two (custom paint done by rimmick) the guy says i'm not sure here i'll show youan old pic of the car at the paint shop, sure enough it was the car the pic was of mr. rimmick, my neighbor. stupid story but crazy...........$30 dollar cutch never agin i'm bettin!

since it sat for 4 years you might want to check the condition of the timming and balance shafts belts before firing her up again.
Good to hear you are fixing it and keeping though, great deal on the clutch too!!

A few have found the injectors gummed up after the car sat for a few years. Might want to run a bottle or two of injector cleaner through it. Watch out for rotted fuel hoses too. Nothing lik an engine fire to make a $500 parts car.
And, yes, replace the belts as they have most likely taken a "set" from being around a pulley for four years.

I third changing the belts. Check out your brakes, and pretty much all the exposed rubber parts. Good to hear that you got it running again. Hope it works well for you.
