Why would you consider a normally-functioning part that is well within spec "MUST replace"? Even to the point of a completely new motor just because this one needed rod bearings?!

I do appreciate the advice, believe me...but I'm just trying to rebuild the motor I have, not replace it with a weaker 8v motor! I mean, would a 993 Turbo owner swap in a 930 motor because the rod bearings went out?! ;)

Oil *galleys* are all cleaned up...aftermarket oil cooler is 40 bucks even if I can't manage to get this one clean, but I'm sure it will be fine...can someone explain why the chain tensioner MUST be replaced, even if it's in good working order?! I understand if it fails I'm in BIG trouble...but can't a new part fail just the same? Please let me know exactly what fails on this part if you know. Thanks!

The chain tensioner and oil cooler must be replaced because it is simply impossible to clean them completely after bearing failure. It is statistically likely they there is bearing material lodged in both units. If and when this material floats free, it will destroy your freshly rebuilt engine.

Chain tensioners should be changed as a matter of course every 75 - 90K miles in any case as they do eventually wear out. J pipe should be replaced at the same time as they tend to crack with age. Cracked J-pipe = low oil pressure to tensioner = tensioner failure = crashed valves.

Oil galleys must be cleaned - a rifle brush from a gun cleaning kit works well. This includes removeing the plugs from the block, cleaning the tubes, and then treplacing the plugs.

Noy being anal retentive - just trying to ensure that you are not doomed to failure before you even begin.

Juvat, thank you very much!

Ok now...what is this J-pipe you guys are talking about? I am clueless. Is it an expensive part, and what purpose does it serve?

The J pipe is the little tube that supplies oil to the chain tensioner.

Can't recall the price off the top of my head I don't think it is that expensive.

Listen to these guys I jusy put my whole (44s engine back together and ihad to make sure everything was corrected and replace. Everything there saying is correct. It's not the money issue it's to keep your Porsche from having this same problem twice.
