need help with excessive fuel smell

Have a 83 944 auto It has 92000 miles bought it new.
Never had any problems til now. filled fuel tank, next morning had a real bad fuel smell inside car. i let the car air out. got under it no leaks, replaced fuel filter in Dec. 03 before storage. Checked all lines with no leaks. The smell comes and goes. what am I looking for!!!!!!!!! Any help would be greatful.

make sure the fuel level sender is on tight

also, you may have a cracked fuel line from the filler neck to the tank

Where is this fuel level sender located. And what am I pulling apart to find cracked fuel line/

Hey CJ, yes we are neighbors....... thats a possibility on Queen Street, more likely on Main Street, in the plantsville section.
Never had a Taurus, but my other car is a Range Rover no bumper sticker though.

Is the smell after running, or after being parked with the tank full?

If it smells after running, immediately get the fuel rail looked at. They will eventually leak, and their location drips onto everything that is hot on the engine. Probably the #1 cause of engine fires. Drive slowly with the right window open, if it's leaking, you'll probably smell it.

The fuel filler neck or vent lines are what does the other one. Even the fuel cap will do that too. The drain line for the filler neck fill will do that too. As mentioned, the guage sender gasket.
