brake rotor question
If you take a wheel off of your car, should your brake rotor have any looseness to it? In other words, if you pull it out and push it in, should it have like 2 mm of play, or should it be in there tight? It seems, on my girlfriend's car, the caliper is what is holding the rotor on. Its a 94 626. I am concerned about this... I think something needs to be tighter, and maybe this would explain the strange grinding sound her brakes make, seeing as how the pads looked adequate, the rotors unmarred and of proper thickness.
Should rotors be loose, or do I need to tighten something? |

Many cars use the wheel to keep the rotors tight. Same with drum brakes.

Cool. Just got confirmation from someone else too... so it seems I will have to continue to hunt down why they grind like unholy hell.

Yes the rotors will be loose. The wheel when it is bolted on is what holds the rotor against the face of the hub. You do not find alot of set screws that hold the rotors on any more except on most european cars. Domestics like fors will put spring washers on the rotors to help keep them in place. Mainly helps in the assm. line. They get cut off the first time the brakes are pulled and not used again.

for the grinding check the pads, aloft of aftermarket pads have an excess amount of metal content in the pads. If the rotor surface is glazed or overheated ( blued) that will add to noise. also how the pad pits in the holder. ie: are the origonal shims and hardwear still in place, are the matting surfaces cleaned and lubed. Most brakes now a dats will make some noise from time to time. Typical with semi-metalic pads, not like a softer asbestos pad that can absorb the vbration when braking. Semi-metailc pads are harder and cannot absorb all of the vibrations adding to brake noise. There are products out there that can be added to o-e or aftermarket brakes when replacing them to help eliminate the noise.
