Unhappy hard shifting and a few other things

ok its getting harder and hard to shift into gears above 3500 rpm, but only above, below is fine. the clutch pedal is really springy, both master and slave cylanders have been replaced not too long ago. the PO kept darn good records of whats been done to the car and i wasnt able to find a clutch job anywhere in there. the trany oil was last changed on 8-15-02. sometimes when i let go of the clutch in or out of gear, mainly when i get out of gear at a light, i hear what sounds like a metal plate hitting another metal plate. some more info in the problem is when im crusing on the highway and i let off the gas the car jurks a little like you are in too high of a gear for the speed, but im doing about 80. when im really on it around 140mph i smell something that smells like rubber burning, only slightly though. first i thought it was the alternator/ac or powerstearing belts, but they never slip. it could also be the ps pump because it leaks a lot, but is never empty. i dont know if this could possibly be part of a rubber centered clutch, but there is never any smoke. thats the best i can explain that problem... on to the other.

the other im pretty sure is the speedo cable. it started out when i got the car below 20 the needle in the speedo would jump around a bit. lately its gotten a little worse though. throughout all the speeds below 100mph, after that it works fine, it jumps in rotation with the tires. espectially bad at 85mph, thats where its worse and constantly goes from 85 to 90 and never stops moving till i speed up or slow down. odd thing is, the less i drive the car the less it jumps.

so im thinking i need a new clutch and a new speedo cable, am i right?

Asking if you should replace that timing belt is like asking if you should re-use a condom that may have in hole in it with a hooker.

clutch is on its way out from the looks of it,

check all fluids,
if very difficult to change, and burning smell, def sounds like clutch

a good check,

get under the transaxle, there is an inspection hole, get your hand in there and feel around for the torque tube, give it a yank, if it rattles or clanks, then clutch is gone, or just about gone

Yep, mine was doing that. A new speedo cable fixed that. But..make sure its seated properly on th back of the gauges first. It could just be loose.

That metal on metal "clang" could mean your clutch's rubber center is shot. Does it seem overly jerky when you let up on the accelerator, maybe even hear the clang when you let up?
