Newbie Questions

I have a few questions to ask, ok one I have a 1985.5 944 turbo, I have been letting it sit for about 6 months and need to know if
I will have to do something before I try starting it? Like I know the oil and gas is bad to let just sit there, but I had no choice, it was pretty much in bad weather, rain and snow (I know--I'm sorry, she's getting taken care of now)

Second, before I stopped driving her, there would always be a grinding noise whenever I started the car, it was a bunch of little piece of metal when I took off the starter, so my question is can I move the engine by turning the crankshaft bolt and somehow keep moving it so that the little pieces of metal/rocks/whatever was making the noise will fall out through the hole where the starter was as I keep turning it?

Last question is: I don't know what one of my switches does, it is on the right side of the steering wheel and it has an amber light at the top of the switch and has a little icon of what looks to me like defrost, the 4 wires got disconnected from the back and I have no clue how to hook them up, I tried different variations and on one of them when I flipped the switch up it would turn my heating lights on, it has a blue wire, 2 red/black wires and a brown wire coming off the back, I need to know how they go back?
I'd appreciate any help on any of these matters, please?
Thanks.
~Mark

Well (pause to figure out where to start)

You hopefully have only broken a few teeth from the starter. You can spin it by hand to check the teeth once removed.

You can turn the crank bolt clockwise to check the flywheel. Or, should I say, have someone turn the crank while you observe the flywheel. How about removing the debris with a magnet?

??? am I having deja-vu ????

Or was this posted by you a few days ago ?

I always wonder how these cars end up in the state they are ..... its kinda of sad when you think about it............. rotting in someones backyard........ I am not picking on you HB........... its just starting to make me think the life these cars lead........... the stories they could tell. ..... getting all sentimental.... sniff ...sniff....

BUt to answer your questions.... I will post the colors that should correspond to the rear defrost switch when I get home and check the electric factory diagrams..... (unlless someone posts them first).

...and as I recall..........on the previous post you started you were told to check the ring gear and get the starter rebuilt.

My advice... keep reading, get a copy of the factory manuals, haynes and PET CD........ right now you are as lost as a baby kitten in the middle of a freeway in rush hour... (p.s if you need help sourcing these shoot me a p.m)

and the last thing I want to see.... is a dead kitten.

If you ask the same question often enough you might get an answer you agree with. Doesn't make it the correct answer.

Unhappy

Thanks for all your help, I am definitely trying to work the major kinks out of the car right now. The biggest problem is finding out if I will need to replace the ring gear, and I was leaking coolant very badly before I stopped driving, and I did post the starter problem a while ago but I wasn't asking the same questions, I was asking about how to get rid of the debris inside the tranny. I appreciate everyone's help by the way.

I know I need to turn the engine but am not really sure where this crankshaft bolt is located, I was feeling around and guessed the approximate location of the crankshaft and based on that I figure it is at the front of the motor, within the belts, so I felt around and felt a large bolt. I know I am not describing it accurately, so if someone could help, it'd be great.

I actually do have the Haynes Manual, 2 to be exact because one my brother bought for me but he didn't get the Turbo version of the manual he got the "All SOHC engines" so I bought another one that said including Turbo, it turns out they are exactly the same except for the spark plug page that has color while the other one has b+w. I also got a copy of the factory manuals on cd from a friend but it, just like the haynes manual, does not have very much info on the turbo. Such as the differences in engine component locations. For example the airbox is completelt different, the exhaust is on the side, I don't like the fact that they advertise the haynes manual as including turbo when all it really has on it is less than half a page about it. I could be wrong on that one though since I don't have my manual with me and I'm not home right now.

I am going to work on moving the engine tomorrow and checking the ring gear but unfortunately I don't have a 1 and 1/16th inch or 27 mm socket to move the crankshaft bolt so I am not sure if I will be able to and hopefully the starter I got off ebay will come soon as well. Sorry about the long post and thanks again to everyone.

~Mark

You need to find yourself a copy of the TUrbo factory supplement....

I really dont think you will find anymore debris than what has fallen out....

When you do turn the crank ... pull the plugs it will make it easier to turn the engine by hand.

Also the 4 wires going to the switch are as follows: If you are lucky the pins in the back may be numbered (a majority of the plugs on these cars are).

6 - red/black
1 - red/black
4 - brown
3 - grey/blue
