Questions on Porsche dealer service

I was recently advised not to go to a Porsche dealer to have my belts and oil gasket and water pump fixed, I can see where this could be helpful to me, because a Porsche dealer wouldn't let me get parts from ebay and give to them to put on, or would they? I love in the NYC area or actually will be moving back their shortly hopefully with my 944 turbo getting towed by the truck i have to rent to move my stuff back, its gonna be like 250 including 15' truck and full car trailer. Now does anyone know of any good places to go for good service, also if I didn't take it to a dealer how would they have the special tools like the sprocket tool and the retensioning tool?

My next question is: would anyone in the NYC area or on the way from Rochester to NYC be willing to help me out? I would pay you guys anything, literally any reasonable amount of money to help me out fixing her up if you have the tools and time to do it? I will be going back in about a week and a half (5/31 or 6/1) so I can stop by any place in PA or NJ or anywhere on the way en route from Rochester to NYC, I would also pay if the car needed to be stored, I would give you a hand on it or I would let you do it yourself and pay you for it, please help anyone, I really don't wanna have a broken 944 anymore All that needs to be done is at the most a water pump job, that's my bigget problem I have a bad coolant leak coming from somewhere. I would greatly appreciate it and would compensate in cash on the spot. Please get back to me at mac1@alfred.edu or on this post, thanks.

Telephone some local PCA guys, they will steer you in the right direction. Or go ask the dealer. I know a lot of dealers won't work on older cars, & will give you the name of someone local.

Most dealers will allow you to bring our own parts (if new) But they wont warranty the work

In my experience they will warranty the work only...obviously not the parts or parts related problems.

It's not very likely that an official Porsche dealer will allow you to supply parts. Some, but not all, independent shops might install parts you supply. No shop I know will offer any warranty. Therefore, if the parts don't fit or don't work you get to pay the labor twice or three times....

As Britwrench said, Some independant shops will allow you to bring in your own parts - There is no warranty and you will most likely NOT get any breaks on labor.

The dealers around here will allow you to bring in parts - they must be new, and the same rules apply.

If a customer wants to supply parts, they have to sign a disclaimer releasing the installer of any liability. All our wholesale parts suppliers have liability insurance. The scenario may be rare that a new part fails but no shop wants to be in the position of being sued due to a part failure and subsequent claim. Sure, supplying your own parts may save you money but it costs the shop, which is why most shops don't want to do it.

Still with the incredible markup shops put on parts (in my experience) shop around for a good mechanic who will take your parts.

Every business marks-up the items it sells. I've yet to see an "incredible" mark-up on Porsche parts. With the internet, parts prices can be easily seen so there's no point in any shop trying to charge more than the market will bear. Maybe the incredible mark-up was the shop's way of declining the work?

In all fairness this was not a Porsche dealer, nor an independent Porsche specialist.

My experience was with a chain brake and muffler specialist who wanted to charge me $275 each for rear brake rotors, that was just the parts cost.

And they weren't declining, they were very eager to schedule the car...now in all fairness, perhaps knowing I had just bought the car they were trying to take me; but it left me with a bad taste.

A small markup to cover the cost of sourcing and aquiring the parts is acceptable, but 100% markup (or more) when you are also charging labor is unacceptable.

I am glad to see you have never seen an incredible markup, I envy your customers...seriously.

Exactly, a shop not aquainted with Porsche, which should be avoided at all costs. In the real world and in most types of businesses, a 100% mark up on certain items is not incredible.

I don't think the shop was trying to "take you" they obviously had no idea of what they were doing and looked up the Porsche MSRP and went from there. This is why there are specialist independent shops.

You are of course correct. In retail, where you are simply the end of the distribution chain, 100% markup is (or used to be) the standard, and it is reasonable since all of your profit (from which you pay rent, salaries, insurance etc.) is from the sale of that product.

It s just my opinion that when you are also going to charge labor ( a major profit center), the parts themself should not be looked at as a major profit center, that profit should be kept modest.

I think the core of our arguments is the same...find the independent Porsche specialist close to you with the best reputation and talk to him about these things. Most Porsche wrenchers won't put their heel on your throat.
