May seem like a silly question

What's a "blown rear". Someone is selling their 944 for a song. In the description he mentions that the car has a "blown rear". Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

How... very descript of them...

Blown rear wheel bearings?
Blown transmission?
Blown LSD?
Blown rear tires?

Question this seller for details! They might not know what's exactly wrong.

Most likely the trans has failed. But! This is sometimes confused with a blown clutch disk! So if you can get the car for $500 or less then you can find a trans from a wrecking yard for about $500 and replace it!

Then you will have a 944 for each foot!

You need to do two things: First make sure the engine runs. Second put it in gear and see if any of the gears will make the car move.

If this is just a blown clutch disk don't tell him! Give him the $500 and tow the car home! A clutch disk can be had for around $200 (and a weekends labor).

Give us a report ASAP!

Here are details of the listing. It baffles me what "REAR" could be blown, as quite a bit of work was done on the car

"
I am selling the car b/c the rear is blown and the practicallity of the car has changed for me, I would trully love to keep it. The car was well maitained with all schedualed maintenance done on time. The car has been in my drive way for nine to ten months and started regularly. "

MORE INFO

The car has a blown rear with about 114k miles, i am not sure exactly b/c odometer stoped working a year ago. The A/C needs a recharge and a battery. The oil cooler gasket has a small leak(very small). The vehicle has somewhat new parts:

1. clutch (plate, disk, bearing) = 3yrs
2. Slave cylinder = 3yrs
3. updated water pump = 3yrs
4. alternator = 2yrs
5. hoses and trany line = 2yrs
6. control arms R/L = 3 yrs
7. rack and pinion = 2yrs
8. throtle cable = 1yr
9. front wheel bearings = 2yrs
10. plugs = 9 months
11. wires = 1yr
12. rear main seal done with clutch = 3yrs

Not really worth that much. I would buy it but I'm crazy that way.

You are looking at a good bit of work.

Oil cooler seals (not that hard but a 10 on the messy scale)
The ac probably needs way more than a recharge. (they don't like to sit)
Schmo lists nothing about the belts (put a belts, roller and seal kit on the list)

Just know what you are getting into but it could be a great project.

I'm siding with you on it, if anything I could use it for parts. It's just a bit overwhelming after looking for almost a year and finally getting an '84 I'm flooded with a bunch of deals all last week.

Try to get it cheap. I think I've got an open diff in awesome shape out of one of my old trannies and I'll let it go pretty cheap. Transaxle isn't hard to pull and any decent transmission shop can install the diff into the transaxle for you. PM me if you're interested and I'll dig it out of my tranny bin.

You can pick up a used NA for tranny for 400 bucks and away you go.....

Even easier than swapping the clutch.....

One day and its rolling....

And if you want a tranny I have one sitting in my garage.... hehehe

I saw that car on e-bay. It looks pretty good in the pics. You can actually get a tranny for less than 400.00. I have sold some early ones for around 250.00 to folks here and on the other board.
