Sold 911 wanting 944.....
So I just got rid of my 911 and have the need for a 944. Just something to play around with. I know that new timing belts are a must, but what else should I look out for? How are the A/C systems in these car? The 911's sucked. What's the best year for a non-turbo 944? Thanks in advace. Hope to come over to the dark side soon.

Wow !!! dont let the others find out you are over here.....WELCOME to the "water'" side.
..the best Modle for you in a way is going to depend on your budget. If there is a "no Price cap". I would have to say the laster 944's the better being the 944S2, tends to have a little higher maint cost buth the 3.0 has better power. Once you find a 944, check the complete service history, always get a PPI, and feel free to post you finds here expecially for market values there is alot of conflicting info out there. check these sites out for other info http://www.clarks-garage.com/purchase.htm http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq.html

Welcome.......is that oil I smell?
![]() Here is the classic 944 buyers guide from Afjuvat Wisdom from the Jedi Master Really should be a sticky at the top of the forum. Good luck with your purchase, post back and we will gladly help. I haven't had the pleasure of a 911 but I really do love my 44 project. One word of caution....make no mistake, if you buy a car for less than $4000 it WILL be a project. Good service records cannot be beat if you don't want to spend downtime. I personally have learned tons and can't wait to fill the stable up with more waterpumpers. ![]()

Oil in the anti-freeze, leaky oil cooler seals
the a/c on my car works but it definately needs a refrigerant recharge. I like the early 944s, lighter and the hp rating is a bit higher than later 944s (with exceptions ie S2). There seems to be a fuel smell in the cabin on a few of the cars mine included I believe the fix is posted on the board some where just do a search.

Another former taildragger saved! I'd look at a 944 turbo if I was you, but if you want n/a, then search for an S2.

Call me a heretic for asking, but what are you asking for your 911 if you're not interested in keeping it? You can PM me. And NO I'm NOT getting rid of my 944, it's just a possible companion. . .

Hey... I have a 1977 911S and it doesn't suck
![]() Mind you... neither did my 87 924S either... and I'd own both cars if I could have afforded to ![]() My 924S was perhaps the easier car to drive at first, as it took a while to get used to the 911 (and to break-in a rebuilt gearbox). My 924S was reasonably quick... but my 911S is considerably faster ![]() -MAS

Porsche-O-Phile, I already sold the 911 a week ago.
MAS, I didn't mean that the car sucked just the A/C system. Quick question, are the fender flares bigger in the back on a turbo than on a non-turbo, non- S. To me it looks like only the fronts are different. |

Yes, regarding turbos: the fender flares are bigger on the front... and much bigger on the back than any of the "normal" 911's (the exceptions being turbo-look wide-bodied options, and a few other rare models) The SCs and Carrera's were flared more than the 74-77 911S's... and the 70's 911's were flared more than the early 911's. Ooops.... if you were referring to 944's... sorry, disregard. -MAS

The 944 fenders for n/a's and turbos I believe will accept the same width tire. Never had an n/a, so not completely sure.

The NA and TUrbo fenders stick out just as far..... The biggest difference is the offset and size of wheels the cars use. The 15" found on the NAs look to small.......... The turbos sit lower as well.... the rear valence fills in the gap found in the NA rear ends ....etc.
All this leads to a lower, wider stance on the turbo.

So a Turbo front & rear valence will bolt right up to a non-turbo.

Sorry about that - just re-read. Oh well. . . I am keeping my eyes open for a decent early 911 though. . .

I do want a 951 but the funds aren't there right now. I am getting engaged soon and thats why I sold the 911. But of course I'm already wanting another p-car. I have about $4-5000 to spend and I figured I could get a decent 944 n/a for that. Anything over that and her ring starts to lose carats.

For some cosmetic changes ....
... to update the NA ... the turbo valence bolts up..... (~200 on ebay) ... 16, 17 inch rims fill in the wheel wells nicely. Front is not an easy bolt on unfortunately.... The easiest change to clean up the front is to remove the front bumper pads, fill in and paint.... Does wonders. .....also the 85.2+ 944s have way better cooling and heat. Here is a pic of mine........... I have since removed the front bumpers ........looks much nicer.. It is my daily driver with well over 200K ![]()

The spoilers will bolt on 'ish' - run ya about $1500 for the conversion.
Newer wheels can be run (i have 1999 + offset with spacers) $300 + wheels. Both na and turbo have their merits. I am very very happy I got the na as a first....got no business or pocketbook to chase HP right now and in the na you don't have that option. I will get a turbo next when I am looking more for horses.

Screw the ring - get her a Porsche. If she loves it, keep her. If she gets upset, run.

You absolutely CAN get extra HP out of an n/a either by a turbo upgrade or a supercharger. It's quite an expensive process though although it does have the advantage that you can do it a bit at a time rather than eating the cost of a 951 all at once. . .
