It's running both rich and lean.

I just pulled the plugs in my 85 944, and replaced them. According to the plugs, the car's running lean (although they'd been in there for at least 12k miles). Maybe I can find a picture somewhere.

However, if you floor the throttle at idle, the engine is so rich that it stumbles over itself trying to get up to speed. After a half-second, it'll rev up normally, but there is that sputtering before then.

Flooring the throttle at anything above about 1800 will rev without sputtering. (running rich at idle, lean at speed maybe?)

The timing sounds a little off, too, but replacing the distributor cap, rotor, and resetting the fuel map didn't make a bit of difference (neither did the plugs, for that matter). Wires look good. Occasionally, when I start it up, it'll idle badly, somewhere around 500-700 rpm. Again, flooring it will flood it, and it'll cut out. But increase throttle graually, and it'll run normally.

I do have an Omnimagnum aftermarket ignition system, but last time I bypassed it, the engine ran the same either way.


Parts I can think of to try replacing: O2 sensor, VAF sensor.

Any ideas?

Could be a bad DME or a bad airflow sensor.

Took some pictures, but the plugs don't show up that well.

I'll assume the DME is ok for now, just because it's so expensive. A vacuum leak would cause all those symptoms?
