why wont it start?

About a year ago I put a 1986 na motor into my 1983 na. It wouldnt start then and I havnt had a chance to work on it untill now. I tested the fuel pump and it was bad so I bought a new fuel pump and installed it. It still wont start but it is getting fuel and fuel is spraying from the injectors. I pulled a spark plug and cranked it over and it has spark. So I have fuel and fire what else could be wrong?

DME relay

Make sure all of your sensors are connected properly

How do you know the injectors are working?

How did you test for spark?

944freak 07-22-2004 06:54 PM

i pulled the fuel rail off and saw the fuel spray and to test for a spark i pulled the plug and cranked the motor with the plug in the plug wire. Today I installed a new DME relay.......When it fires its like the intake valves are open or something because its like it belches back out the intake. I cant find anything showing where the plug wires go on the rotor cap but I have them on there the same as they are on the 86 turbo. Since i wasnt sure i moved the number 1 plug wire to the upper left plug on the rotor cap and put them on 1 3 4 2 and it would fire and I would get little puffs of smoke instead of firing out the intake....i am confused.

944freak 07-22-2004 07:53 PM

The puffs of smoke I mentioned above were out of the muffler

Rotor rotation is clockwise as standing in front of the car looking at the dist cap. Number one wire goes in the 5 o-clock location.

Pull the dist cap and make sure the rotor is not burned through between the tip and the center. Make sure the tip is not burnt down to the plastic. Check that the rotor screws are still intact.

Ok I have the wires on correctly and when it fires it seems the pressure excapes through the intake. The rotor and cap are in good condition. I think im going to take the timing belt cover off and check the timing and if its not that would that leave the speed and reference sensors?

944freak 07-23-2004 07:43 PM

I really hope not...... this was pretty much a fresh motor last year

944freak 07-23-2004 07:56 PM

my number 1 wire is on the bottom right plug 1 3 4 2

944freak 07-23-2004 08:19 PM

clockwise when im facing the distributor

944freak 07-23-2004 08:22 PM

is there any chance it could be the speed or reference sensor

944freak 07-23-2004 08:56 PM

Yea the rotor looks brand new, I dont think ill have a chance to work on it any more till monday but i will unplug an injector and try that on monday.

944freak 07-23-2004 09:08 PM

Well I trusted the seller because he wrecked his car sideways into a telephone pold. I saw pics of the car. Supposedly the motor has an aftermarket cam in it and the clutch was brand new. I looked at the clutch and it appeared to be new. You never know anymore though. I still have the old engine and im not sure if it is damaged or not. I should pull it apart and see if the valves are intact in case i have to swap heads or something. Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to try that one out on monday too.

if you need to know if you got a stuck valve run a compresion test on it, should take 20 mins.

FWIW when i did my 86 engine into 85/1 car i had the same problem, no start and blowing black smoke. untill i used the 85/1 DME, Intake Manifold/throttle body, AFM, and Altenator. for some CRAZY reason the parts i just mentioned that were on/for the 86 engine made the car not start and blow black smoke. i dont know what exactly i did there but i got er running by switching those parts. wierd huh, i thought it was...

good luck

I have an 86 engine in an 83. Didn't have to change out a thing in the 83 to get it to run. Realy no difference in the basic engine as far as the wiring with the exception of the temp gauge sender. Then you just use the larger of the two pins on the newer sender.

944freak 07-24-2004 11:00 AM

i used the 86 motor and the 83 afm.

944freak 07-24-2004 08:12 PM

right It has an 83 dme and 83 afm with the 86 engine.
