Drove an M3 today
I saw an '98 M3 for sale on my way home today, so I decided to take it for a spin. Wow, it is fast and has lots of torque. I didn't care for the gear positions though, they were so close to one another, every shift felt wrong. The pedals are close together too, far closer than my 944. I did like the solid feel of the car, the steering was light and responsive, and it had a very quiet ride except for the low purr of the engine. Handling was good, but not 944 good. I have been thinking about selling my 944 and buying an M3, but honestly I can't afford the new bodystyle and I am not that fond of the late 90's style. Looks like I'll stick with what I got.

Mike,
I've been driving my 86 NA for 10 years and recently bought a 98 M3. Are you driving a Turbo? The M3 is a lot more car than the 44. Granted, there are stil some things about the 44 I like better, but you can't beat it for a true 4 seater.

I drove a 98 or 99 M-roadster. I loved it, I would have brought it home if I had 30 grand laying around.

I drove a 2002 Lancer Evo 271hp stock, 4 wheel drive, 5spd, 4 doors. At work the other day, SOme guy traded it in and I got to do the UCI (used car inspection). I'LL tell you what that car can move, Hnadles great and the braked are awsome. Only thing is until 3,000rpm its like driving a corola, but once that turbo puts down 20psi it halllssss ASSSS. Kinda cool. Only thing I dodnt like is thats its 4 doors and has a stupid big wing on the back.

I drove my friends EVO with 350 hp and coil over suspension. It feels most at home while sliding through a corner while at full boost. Totally kick ass car!

the m3 is bulletproof. i drove my 98 for 116,000 miles with no problems. changed the brakes once and that's it. just oil changes and it is ready to race.
people like to over maintain them, but they are built for torture and rarely fail. if you are an absolute moron and do not perform the basic maintenance (oil change, not mis-shifting, letting the oil temp rise before redline, coolant level, etc), you might be able to kill that motor.
