ring and pinion failure
is $2000 too much to have the ring and pinion replaced? I have priced rebuilt transmissions for $1700.

Its about right...... the ring and pinion have to be replaced in a set. The tranny is not a DIY job. Unless you have access to a few different presses.
but you are better off picking up a used tranny for <$500. I would rather replace it 4 times that unload $2K for a tranny that may fail anyways. The tranny is super easy to swap out.

With only looking at pictures of the 928 transmission, the differental is in the back of the unit. It looks like it might fit, maybe with the snail shell torque tube. Now the pictures of the auto transmissions look the same for the 924/944/928. Will it fit, who knows, a talented person can make almost anything fit.
