Chirping / Whistling Sound
'87NA Automatic, 80k..
For the past 2 weeks I've noticed a cyclical chirping / whistling sound (sounds like a nest of birds...) almost directly under the center console/shifter area. All belts are new (within 5k) so i'm ruling that out. Anyone have any quick ideas of what it could be so I can follow up on it? Thanks in advance. |

and while you're at answering his question...is the fuel pump supposed to be noisy? anywhere above 5k there's a loud low-pitched whistle coming from the rear of the cap proportional to the engine speed.

Doh! Forgot to mention: It happens as soon as the car starts running... Park, Neutral, Drive, etc.. It is constant from Park to 80mph (atleast when i can hear it over the exhaust).

The only thing rotating under the shifter is the drive shaft and rubber damper on the flywheel. Could be one of the bearings in the drive shaft. If it was the rubber seperating in the damper you would be hearing a lot of noise.
