Turn signals, troubleshooting, and fixing..

OK, I've searched and searched, and there's nothing here that has information about my problem. Plenty of turn signal problems, but not any like this:

Problem: Flip turn signal lever, green light on dash comes on, and stays solid. Nothing happens outside(unless the keys are out of the ignition, and then the parking lights come on) It's not the relay, I put a working one in the slot(G4) and it didn't change anything. As some of you may know if you have read Siberian's posts, this problem arose when he took out an aftermarket alarm, so it's a wiring problem.

There are some wires under the dash that are dangling, and I think they are the turn signal wires (http://www.ueak.net/chayes/wires1.jpg) I think, that if I reconnect them (http://www.ueak.net/chayes/wires2.jpg - they look like different sizes but they are the same size) they will work.

What I need is if someone doesn't mind looking under there and seeing what those blue wires are connected to, or if they are even there(they could be part of the alarm and this could be a complete dead end..)

I'd appreciate any advice on this topic, as well...

edit: here are the old posts with more detail on the alarm system, etc..

The hazards flash with the alarm.

The bulbs are good as far as I can tell, same with the fuses.

Going to check for the black with green stripe wire right now.

edit: don't have a 24mm socket here right now, I guess this will have to wait until the morning...

Also, I'm sure the switch is switching because the parking lights come on for the corresponding side when you flip the lever(but only when the car is off and the keys are out of the ignition)... so that pretty much narrows it down to the wire not being connected, and once I connect it, it should work, right? I checked all fuses with a multimeter, they are good...

Got a friend coming over with a 24mm socket in a bit, is there anything else I can look for in the meantime?

Clowd 08-17-2004 02:26 PM

How do I get in back there to take the connector off? I took the wheel and the plastic peice off and I still don't really have access to the switch.

Clowd 08-17-2004 04:45 PM

Well, I still haven't been able to test the wires, but I know they are cut, it's just a matter of finding where... too bad it's not as easy as it sounds.

In any case, my headlights don't work now either... I put it back in the garage and am taking a break for tonight.

I would really appreciate it if anyone else has any ideas, comments, or ANYTHING.

Clowd,

How did you kill the headlight?
The wires are color coded. Just attach the wires coming off the two relays to the same color wires under the dash.

There is a ground wire coming off the relays, ground it somewhere around the LEFT foot rest (there should be a ground point already there).
Check the alarm bag in the trunk that has the remaining removed wires, it may give you some more ideas...

So, I should have just went with my original plan?

In the first place I was just going to attach these blue wires: http://www.ueak.net/chayes/wires1.jpg

to the relays: http://www.ueak.net/chayes/wires2.jpg (there's another one of the same blue wires on the other relay)

Then, the yellow wire on one of them is attached to a ground wire, but the yellow wire on the other one isn't connected to anything?

The two relays are bridged, with white wire on one side and black on the other, and some sort of connector in the middle:

And, there are some other connectors, and I have no idea where they could go, there's nothing under there that they would plug into:

Here's the whole thing, for reference:

How's it coming? I'm starting to feel bad, didn't think it would me so much trouble....
Are there any wrenchers in NH willing to lend Clowd a hand?

Best thing to do would be to take a look under another '87 944 dash and try to sort it out from there.

Makenzie71 08-18-2004 08:02 PM

Clowd, have you tried to see if the realy was the culprit?

Eli K 08-18-2004 08:04 PM

he did...it's not. I pulled out an aftermarket alarm out of the car as it was draining the battery. After the alarm was out car wouldn't start, etc. I slowly reconnected most of the wiring back, with the exception of turn signals (as they were wired into the alarm for flashers, etc.)

Makenzie71 08-18-2004 08:10 PM

So none of the flashers work? How about the hazards?

Better question: Is the relay before or after the alarm?

Ah, dont' feel bad, I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. It's kind of fun, anyway... just frustrating at times.

Here's what works, and what doesn't:

Car off - flip switch, parking lights for corresponding side comes on.

Car on(or key in accessory pos.) Nothing. Green light on dash comes on and stays solid, nothing happens outside.

Hazards don't work.

I had a friend take a look at it for me, he's good with electrics and such, after taking a long hard look at the schematics in the haynes manual, we narrowed it down to a gray wire coming off the ignition switch, that should be getting 12v but it isn't getting anything, we couldn't figure out why.

Makenzie71 08-18-2004 08:34 PM

run a 12v jumper to it and see what happens.

Clowd 08-18-2004 08:42 PM

Will try it as soon as I get home tommorow, would be nice if it works

Eli K 08-19-2004 06:09 PM

Any luck?

Clowd 08-19-2004 08:00 PM

You know what? I checked the part numbers for the relays, and I don't have the right flasher relay.. I'm thinking that since I don't have the right relay in there, that's why the gray wire isn't getting power.. I'm going to go to the dealer and get one tommorow(unless it's outrageously expensive, and then I'll order it here.)

Makenzie71 08-19-2004 08:01 PM

the relays in the car are all fairly generic...you can probably find another that shares the same part number and test it.

Clowd 08-19-2004 08:08 PM

There is a 944 dumped down the road from me, but it's in a seemingly-illegal chop shop, and the owners aren't too friendly..

There's also someone about 2 houses down from me that has one in his driveway every so often(at least once a week) so I might ask to try his relay, just to see if it helps...

I don't know how logical my solution is, it's just all I have so I'm clinging to it.
