What kind of oil would you recommend for my 85.5 944? i live in Chicago so it needs to handle a cold winter.

Castrol GTX was supposedly the state of the art at the time. It was what the car was engineered for. Today the scales seem to tip towards Mobil 1 synth....but only if your seals are good.

Synthetic is a two-sided coin. Sure, it is better for your car, but if there is a way for it to leak, it will find that way.
I just swallow the $5 per month and let it leak a little.

Mobil 1 is generally better on newer cars. The protection it offers doesn't mean squat if the car has had another type of oil in most of its life.
Older cars prefer a more gloopy oil. I was recommended Castrol RS (not GTX) which is hard to get hold of but is wonderfully thick (until up to temperature) and offers better engine protection. It is also designed specifically for performance engines. Now my car runs much more smoothly than it did when I had Mobil in (which did leak a bit) and it doesn't leak at all. I could get a job on QVC for that sales pitch!!! Seriously though, thats what I've found works best for me...

Mobil 1!!!
Don't let these guys talk you into running a conventional oil. Synthetics are worth the extra cash for the protection you gain over a conventional.

Castrol RS IS synthetic, it's just gloopier so it actually works!

It's a full synthetic? I don't pay much attention to the Castrol line-up. I always just walk in, grab my mobil 1 and leave =)
