944 Modding Questions

Ok well we all know the 944 n/a is no stright line beast. The question is, what can I do to the car, to make it run say a 15.5. I know the wilks chip is an option but i havent seen any numbers from cars with it on.

Other than the chip, im not really sure of too many options out there that are for our cars. Anyone know where about I should go after a chip, to get me to about ~15 - 15.5 down the quarter mile.

Here is a thread that might help....

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/186093-engine-finished.html

Fast924s has done some other mods to the na engine with good results as well.

Figured I'd get those in before you get flamed for the 1/4 mile mention...

seaboltman 10-18-2004 07:11 PM

well... the quarter mile is the standard test for the machine. Its not like im trying to get godly numbres, a 15.5 is by far, not quick but i believe it should be easily attainable with our cars.

Now if i had asked about a 12 and mentined NOS...

AaronM 10-18-2004 07:28 PM

Just be careful with dragstrip runs, the 944's transaxle tends to be a weak point if you try speed-shifting or any abruptness with the clutch.

well honstly, i dont plan on racing it. the 15.5 was really just so we have an idea at what kind of performance gains im looking at.

CJFusco 10-18-2004 07:38 PM

FRWilk chip

I can't say it emphatically enough

I have seen a power prom before-and-after dyno. The difference is absolutely amazing... and you really, really, really feel the difference. I had a friend (not naming any names) try to race me off the line at a light in his stock 944, and it wasn't even close. I wouldn't be surprised if around a half second was shaved off the 0-60 time

seaboltman 10-18-2004 07:43 PM

I was Definantly going to spend the money on the FRWilk chip. Top of the list, first thing out the gate. The true question is: where after that?

fast924S 10-18-2004 07:46 PM

Hey seaboltman, There are many mods you can do to a NA but most are alot of money. First you could start ditching some weight, like rear seats, A/C ect. Lossing weight is like getting free HP.
Here is a list of the basic bolt ons that would help your ride

Stage 1
1. FR-wilks Power PRom (a must)
2. Header
3. Cat back exhaust
4. ignition upgrade
5. short **** kit
6. throttle response cam

The mods listed above will give you a few extra HP and the short shift kit and throttle response cam will help you drop some time

Now if you wanna start spending more money you could

Stage 2
1. MAF upgrade
2. larger throttle body
3. under drive pullies
4. Performance Cam
5. Balance and Blue print Injectors (no HP gains)

Then there is the Big money stuff

Stage 3

1. head work (porting and polishing)
2. Race valve job
3. Knife edge crank crossed drilled and fully balanced
4. Higher CR pistions
5. stronger and lighter connecting rods
6. better oiling system (968 pickup and baffels)
7. light weight fly wheel
8. Boring to a 2.7 or 2.8

Then there is you basic power adder kits like

1. nitrous ( I have heard that the NA engine responds well to a 50-75hp shot)

2. Supercharger kits ( nice but alot of $$$$$, after a SC mods are endless)

Let me know If you have any questions, I will be building Project RED BLAZE this winter, I hope to have it done mid summer if funding is there.

seaboltman 10-18-2004 07:51 PM

fast924s you are the man that i have been wanting to hear from. Do you have any rough HP numbers? Mainly looking at the stage 1 and the UD Pullies. Thanks alot

*edit* Also, wheres a good place to get most things. Only place i can remember from a while back is 9xauto.com but if i remember correctly, they are over priced.

ae1969 10-18-2004 08:01 PM

To be honest your best performance gain on the NA.

Lose weight. You and your car. :)

fast924S 10-18-2004 08:02 PM

Here is a site with pics of my 87 924S

http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?username=fast924s&x=16&y=12

As for solid HP numbers I do not have any dyno time but I could give you a estimate

1. FR-wilks Power PRom (a must)= I think he has dyno'd a 17HP increase!, better usable power band

2. Header= approx 4hp

3. Cat back exhaust= approx 4hp

4. ignition upgrade =1 hp (throttle response is better)(feels like more torque)

5. short **** kit = NO HP gain

6. throttle response cam=No HP gain

8. Under drive pullies = Im not sure maybe 3hp

Agian I am guessing at these numbers so Im not sure

I am sure that if you do all of stage 1 and the UD pullies you will notice a difference, it wont be any HUGE difference but it willl be there

fast924S 10-18-2004 08:04 PM

Also you might want to think about getting a 951, alot more upgrades and Big HP numbers

seaboltman 10-18-2004 08:18 PM

See im not really interested in MEGA speed. Thats not what Im getting this car for. Im not going to spend Thousands upon thousands of dollars on mods. This car isnt about that to me. All I want to do, is give this car the added pep that it should have to begin with.

fast924S 10-18-2004 08:23 PM

Cool then the stage 1 setup wuth the UD pullies should do it for you man. Let us know how it goes

rammstein 10-18-2004 08:51 PM

Drop weight. There's plenty to lose. Start with a lexan hatch, add fiberglass rear bumper, you're already probably down 100lbs there. Pull out the rear seat. Maybe even a fiberglass hood... some lightweight seats. That will up your accel AND your handling, not to mention a few extra MPG too!

bluebullet 10-19-2004 12:38 AM

Ignition upgrades do little to nothing, unless yours is worn out to the point of misfire. I think I might upgrade to a blaster 2 or 3 coil, but my stock system fires a 10.6:1 compression motor without a problem. Some new injectors would clean my car out , and I would like to redo the entire exhaust properly once I get new headers. A FR Wilk chip should definetly be on your to-get list, as it is mine.

Just a question but who makes underdrive pulleys? The only one I can use is the Alternator though because after this winter that is going to be the only thing that my motor will be driving. The broken A/C is getting ripped out for weight reduction and more cooling to the radiator. Do they make a crank pulley?

TCMdocs944 10-19-2004 06:47 AM

I chime in here with lose weight.

Isn't 15.5 pretty close to what we run anyway?

Seems like the guy that ran a stock 944 at the 'grassroots motorsports 2004 challenge' wasn't too far off that mark. All he did was put in a straight pipe.

You could probably drop 100lbs off the car without really making too huge of a cosmetic or functional dent.

scottmandue 10-19-2004 07:05 AM

Who make this "larger throttle body" I keep hearing about? Where can they be bought and fo rhow much?

Is that the deal where you send them your throttle body and bore it out?

CJFusco 10-19-2004 07:52 AM

there are ads to have your throttle body bored out in excellence. $300 core, I believe

Rmills944 10-19-2004 08:14 AM

The throttlebody will not do much to an N/A. The air will be greater, but unless you can get more fuel into the ratio, the AFM will still limit the amount of air coming in.
