Porsche Crest I'm looking for a 951 or 968 engine!

Im looking to do a motorswap on my 944 just as a project, want more omph! Anyone out there have a 951 (with turbo + intercooler+maybe DME) or 968 w/DME, if no DME, let me know anyways. Oh, the exhaust and intake would also be nice too.

There's a 968 engine for sale on ebay going for $3,750 Doesnt say anything about mileage though. Would preffer the 3.0 over the turbo (less work and head scratching and of course... more HP with out having to mess with it). Let me know!!! e-mail me at Loquat15@yahoo.com or reply to this post. Thanks!

You can build a 951 engine to produce insane amounts of power - probably for a helluva lot less than you'll find a 968 engine for. You'll likely need the transmission also; either a 951 or 968 engine will make short work of the n/a tranmission pinion unless you're very gentle with it.

Save yourself some work - there's a 944 with 968 engine for sale on the Rennlist classifieds going for less than 7 thousand, iirc.

One problem though, what happens when you tweak out a 944 turbo engine in california and then you have to get it checked for emissions? Uh, well... you basically have to bend over and pull down your pants. Well its just a bunch of crap is what it really is. Maybe, i've got time to think about it anyways.

The 3.0 is a nice engine, but nothing like a 951 engine. I've had them both, no comparison.

Currently, my 944 is registered in MA which didn't care what you have under the hood. But to get it reregistered in CA, I'll need to either 1) hope the guy doing the inspection doesn't notice -- a turbo is probably hard to not notice, but a 3.0L engine is hard to know that it doesn't below. The only sore spot for me is that I have a cone filter, which is a red flag item, but I'll be replacing that with a more discreet S2 airbox.... or 2) go through the referee process. Otheres have been successful with 944 engine swaps going through the referee process -- serious PITA, however.

Also, the original tranny only lasted 5000 miles with the 968 engine transplant -- there is no way you're going to be driving gently after an engine swap!

I'd only recommend the swap if you enjoy projects -- time/money wise, you'll better off buying a 951 or 968. But that wouldn't exactly be good sport now, would it?

IIRC the law in CA is you can swap engines legally provided the engine is newer than the one you're replacing and all the emissions stuff that comes on said engine is intact. Double-check the state regs (I think it's on the website for either DMV or CA Dep't of Air Quality Management), but I'm pretty sure you're okay that way. As far as a turbo, it's likewise fine if you can sell it as "stock" or if you can find a system that has CARB (CA Air Resources Board) exemption numbers. It IS a gigantic pain in the ass and you can get failed for tremendously stupid things, even some that HELP emissions, but that's CA law for you.

Anyway, I'd go with the 3.0L and then work on a forced induction system for THAT. That will put down some serious H.P. and is ultimately what I'd like to do with my car, but that's a long time (and a lot of money) in the future. . .

This guy had/has? a rearended complete car for $2500 in California.

If he still has it, it would give you everything you need for the swap. Plus you could easily sell off anything you didn't need.

He still does and his landlord want the car out. I've looked at the car and driven it -- let me know if you want details.
