Steps In Taking Front Bumper Off?

Hey guys, ive been procrastinating with my car for a while now..but when i had it in a parking lot a while back, someone hit my car's front end and it bashed in the bumper in one side, everything else is fine, except for the bumper.

I need to know how to take the thing off so i can get to the 2 brackets holding the bumper, im gonna replace the bracket so it's not pushed in anymore, and then im selling the car.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks.

Wait a day or two, the bumper shock may push itself back out...mine did a couple of years ago.

Otherwise, there are two bolts, (either 19mm or 17mm I think) that attach the bumper to the car. The two holes to access them are on the bottom side of the bumper, about the middle of the black rubber.

Remove the two bolts, and you are ready to pull the bumper off. Pull straight forward an inch or two, and disconnect the parking lights.

Easy.

depending on the size of your hands it can be done without removing much. But now if the bumper is pushed in the easiest way is to remove the front header panel. the bumper is only held in by the 2 bumper shocks, wich are held dowm by 2 13mm bolts. One above the shock and one below. The best way i have found lately with the bumper shocks compressed is with a 13mm "gearwrench" or similar ratcheting wench. Yow will go nutts with a standard wrench a 1/4 turn at a time.

i would try from underneath without removing the header.

I hope this helps.

you can also try to pull the shock back out, If you do not want to damage your paint you can usally warp a nylon strap behind the bumper and around the base of the shock. Attach the other end to something solid and pull it out. that will give you more access to the bolts

I've had the exact same problem, and i couldn't get to the hole underneath the bumper for the 19mm bolt on the side that had been pushed in, so i got to it by taking off the front spoiler - about 15 little nuts and bolts ranging from easy to pretty flipping awkward! Then after taking the pushed in shock off the car i could not get it to pull out whatever i tried, so i took the other shock off and drilled that to let out the oil and pushed that side in - so at least it is now even.

getting to it from the top as s928s suggested may be the way forward that I didn't consider at the time - but at least now you have two options.

JUST SO YOU KNOW, YOU CAN'T PULL THE HEADER PANEL ON THE EARLY CARS!
The header panel was welded on in the 83-85.1 models. You must pull the bumper or valance or both.

In a way I'm pleased to hear that - and that I didn't end up doing it the difficult way after all

Glad I could help. You'd have to drill out some tack welds and take a few bolts out - it's a lot more work than the 85.5 - up.
