Selling Car. How Much Should I Ask For?

Alright

1983 Porsche 944.

-140 000 Miles
-Power Steering (Strangely, it has it)
-Power Brakes
-Power Windows
-5 Speed
-Limited Slip Differential (Posi)
-Gray in Color
-Leather Interiour (Really Clean)
-Engine really strong
-H4 Headlight Conversion
-Brand new hood shocks :P
-Pirelli P6000 Tires, Lots of Tread Left
-Black Fuch Rims
-When i bought the car from the previous owner, he told me that 2000 dollars worth of new parts were put into the car a month before he had sold it to me, and showed me a bill of sale from a nearby shop. I confirmed the parts, it included a new oil pump, fuel pump, waterpump, and an assortement of other goodies, i dont remember which, because i was not given the paper. That was a year ago, and since driving it, i have put 10 000 miles on it.

Problems:
-Synchro worn on 4th&1st Gears
-Oil Sending unit sometimes gives improper oil pressure reading
-Odometer JUST stopped working yesterday, i dont want to add anymore mileage on it, so im selling it. I dont want to fix it, cause that costs money
-Rear hatch shocks dont work, they wont hold up the hatch
-Front lip is damaged, i will post pictures of it in more detail

I was thinking of selling it in the neighbourhood of...i dunno..3000 Canadian? Is that too much to ask?

3000 canadian is too little. your odometer may be fixable. sometimes a little gear that drives it slips down on its shaft. easy fix. sometimes, the gear is broken. costs about $20 - $30, easy fix.

yea.. what nynor said.. for the $30 it costs for the new odometer gear, IMO its worth it to fix before selling. You could be the most honest guy in the world, but I still wouldn't buy a car with a broken odometer. Just my 2 cents.

it is very likely that the gear isn't even broken. i've taken three odometers apart, all of them were the same: gear had slipped down the post.

BTW. If any of you guys want the car before i put it up on autotrader, you're welcome to make me offers.

However, i cant drive the car to you, that would require insurance, i havent had insurance on the car since the 21st of october.

Seeing as car prices vary depending on location I would look at autotrader etc. and see what they are going for in your area.

Just for comparaison, i have a 1987 944NA, 165K miles, running perfectly, good paint, upgrades. And there is no buyer at 4.5 K US$....

The market is that soft for those 944, unless you have a Turbo or an S2. Am i asking too much?

Id ask $5000 US for it. You should be able to find a buyer.

Well..i dont wanna get too greedy. I bougth the car for 3900 Canadian, reason for sale: Guy had like 10 cars..he didnt care how much he sold it for, he just wanted it gone.

I'd feel kinda guilty asking for more than what i paid for the car

Just because you got a good deal doesnt mean you should ask less than what the cars is worth on the market. Im not saying rip people off. Not to mention yours is an 83, which are far and few between these days. Plus i ether missed something or yours is a sunroof delete. Which alot of folks would love to have. ANd its been maintained.

Ive paid $5 for an NA in nice shape. I d rather pay a little more for one maintained than $3k for something I have to put $3k into.

But what does $5000 buy you these days? An old honda, a saturn, an toyota corrolla.

Okay are we all doing the math, the car is in Canada... I don't know what the exchange rate is but there is a difference between Canadian $$ and American.

Not sure but $3000 Canadian may be $4000-$5000 American.

Guys, you're being incredibly optimistic - my '83 has fewer miles, doesn't need a new transmission, and had a fairly new clutch and I paid $2000 for it last winter. We're talking about a high-mileage car that's going to need a high-dollar repair right off the bat, and it's got the less-desirable early interior and damaged front spoiler. There's no mention of when the belts have been done, either.

At 3 or 4 thousand, someone has lots more options - lower miles, newer cars, better condition. I'd say Farleyd's car fall more into that price range, since it's got good upgrades even with it's high miles.

I disagree with the comment about the less desirable early interior. I have read in Excellence how inferior my interior is to the newer, more up to date 85.5 944. I think it is a matter of taste. I personally would rather have the old interior instead of the newer interior which in my opionion looks as if it is from a mid 90's Maxima.
(I am writing this in order to try to raise the values of early 944s)
I would think start at $4500 and go from there. Early nice 944s are hard to find.

I would start at $4500 and subtract the cost of fixing the car to be a solid daily driver - which is a couple of grand, minimum. The '87 comes closer, but again - lower mileage cars are sitting. I watched an '86 with fewer than 100k sit on a lot for 4 months at $4500. It recently popped up for sale in another state for $3500.

Scottmandue:

3000 Canadian is about 2500 American in it's current exchange rate.

Bad time to sell a 944 in Toronto, why not wait for the spring and get in while the market for sports cars is a little better.

Price is a tough one, All it takes is one person to buy the car, your car looks nice and is a nice color. I would start with a price in mind, if you want 3000 for the car, list it at 4000.
There is a 84 that "needs work" for $5000, so i think asking $4000 is perfectly reasonable. The prices for 944s in Canada seem stupidy high so its tough too compare to the US.

Since I am a 944 wanna-be....

I have been watching the e-bay market - pelican - renlist religiously.

The market is down. I have seen may worthy n/a's around 3-5k and turbo's 6-8k. Of course, REALLY nice of either example can go much higher.

I hope when I have saved enough $$$ in the spring the prices will still be low!!!
