In decreasing order of likelihood...
1) Bad Starter/Starter Solenoid 2) Bad Positive Connection 3) Bad Ignition Switch 4) Bad Ground from Battery to Engine. gb

Can the starter and starter solenoid be replaced independently of each other on a 944?

1. Teeth on the starter gear and/or flywheel missing.
2. Starter stuffed with electrically heated socks.

a hum from the starter usually means that the gear on the shaft in the starter isn't making contact with the flywheel. my suggestion is to take the starter off and lubricate the shaft. and also check the spring. there might be a bur on the shaft, make sure it is smooth.

A hum from the starter motor - I assume this means the motor is not spinning. If so, I say dead winding in the starter motor, or a bad brush. Could also be a bad solonoid.
Check voltage across starter motor while it's engaged. should be greater than 10 or 11 volts. if it's lower, i would suspect a bad connection. Could also be battery cables wrapped with socks for insulation, or battery cables replaced with lamp cord!

well, i guess there is another sort of hmming sound that could be made. If the shaft is unable to spin in the starter, there is the possiblity that the magnetic field being over loaded will cause a hmming sort of sound.
The starter is an easily removed item, just pull it off and test it like so. if it the starter test is fine, then check battery cables. I have heard horror stories where corrosion was found inside a wire while the conncections appeared fine. Sometimes battery terminals can be bad and not pass a good current.

Uhmmm considering Mother Juvat finds this interesting..............
I would assume its not as obvious as he states... so I am saying the wrong bosch starter was installed.......... spins in opposite direction. ![]() Teeth are ground off............. and it just spins.... or Car threw a rod....... the owner not realizing what had occurred tried to start it again.... teeth got smashed ............and starter just spins freely.

quiet hum w/ voltage drop - someone dropped a bolt in the hole over the bellhousing and its wedged in there.
loud hum (starter turning) - you forgot to bolt it back to the bellhousing (lol)

It was a bad ignition switch - burned contact at the "start" position, everything else on the switch was fine.

If there was no voltage going to the starter then the starter should not be making any noise.

You are correct - the humming was actually from the fuel pump. From inside the car, it just sounded like the starter motor was turning
