Trying to install new shifter. can't figure out how to remove the old shifter ( knob) from the old shifter. Trying not to destroy the thing. Any suggestions.

What year is your car?

on the later cars, if you remove the shift boot, you will see the spring clip that holds the knob on.

The car is an 87. I have the factory manual and referenced the clips but there are no clips. The shaft fits snug in the knob. I can not pull it out of the knob. I can not vouch for the fact this shifter is orginal.

It does not appear this shift is orginal equipement. Not sure where this came from. There is no clips nor a place for a clip. Did the early cars have a one piece shifter???

I had a one piece shifter in my 86 that must have been out of an earlier car as well. If it looks like the end of the shifter is molded into the shifter knob, then you have a one piece shifter and are going to need a new shift lever and knob.

This picture shows you what an early (i presume anyways) one piece shifter looks like (on the left), and the knob of a later 2 piece shifter...sorry dont have a picture of the later shift lever.

thanks for the information. I appears that I have an 86 model shifter. I have a knob ( 2 piece ) from my junk yard visits and have ordered the vibration rubber inserts and the clips. Thanks to all for the help!

I am guessing the one piece is a 83-85 shifter, and 2 piece is 86 and later. I think mine was not original in my 86.

I don't know that this is valid. My 84 had the type of shifter with the circlip before I replaced it - is that what you are talking about?. The shifter was the original too.
